Complete Guide to the Celtic Cross Tarot Spread

62.6K views

The Celtic Cross is one of the most widely recognized methods of tarot divination, and it appears in nearly every reading guide. As its name suggests, you lay out ten cards in a cross formation, turning them over one by one. Because it offers a broad overview, deep analysis, and a close look at the question itself, the Celtic Cross is often used to examine a single issue in detail.

Its interpretive model is similar to the "Mirror Spread," as both assess multiple facets of a specific question and offer insight into past, present, and future developments. It generally suits questions about love, friendship, and academics/career, and it is especially effective for academic or career-related topics.

For clearer answers, try framing your question as: "If I do this, will it lead to a good result?" or "Can this situation or problem be resolved?"

1. Scope of Application

Questions—Love, Friendship, Academics, Career

2. Layout

  • Shuffle and cut the cards as usual. Place the seventh card from the top in position (1), as shown in the diagram above.
  • Place the next five cards in order from (2) to (6). Note that the card in position (2) should be laid horizontally. All cards in your hand are upright; for this horizontal card, rotate it 90 degrees clockwise before placing it.
  • Next, count the remaining cards from top to bottom. When you reach the seventh card, place it in position (7), tilted slightly to the right as shown in the diagram.
  • You should have three cards left. Place these diagonally to the right in positions (8) to (10).
  • The layout is complete. Reveal all the cards and interpret them as a whole.

3. Card Position Meanings

  • The current state of the issue.
  • Obstacles or support related to the issue. To determine whether a horizontal card is upright or reversed: if the face of the card points left, it is upright; if it points right, it is reversed.
  • The querent’s ideals or future goals regarding the issue.
  • Past causes or conditions of the issue.
  • The recent past of the issue (usually within the last two to three months).
  • The near future development of the issue (within the next two to three months).
  • The querent’s current state.
  • The influence of the surrounding environment and others’ perspectives.
  • The querent’s abilities.
  • The final outcome of the issue.

Note: Even though the cards in positions 7 to 10 are slightly tilted, upright or reversed still applies.

Question: I applied to a research institute overseas in March and plan to go abroad for further study in early September. Although I’ve received the admission notice, I’m short on tuition and living expenses. I’m working hard before I leave to save more, but my income isn’t meeting expectations, and the tedious prep for visas and housing is stressing me out. Card Interpretations:

1. "Temperance" Reversed

You feel off-balance and ineffective—that’s your current state. Funding is tight, and life feels out of sync. You’re torn between earning more for your study-abroad fund and dedicating energy to preparations. Pressure from family and friends adds to the stress, interrupting your plans and leaving you overwhelmed. Right now, you’re short on inner clarity and steady focus. To break out of this chaos, clear your mind, set aside material distractions, identify your true priorities, and address issues one by one to restore balance.

2. "The Star"

Your main obstacle isn’t money—it’s a loss of confidence and the courage to create a concrete plan. Without clear goals, the constant stream of problems naturally feels overwhelming, leading to disappointment, helplessness, and fear.

3. "The Hermit" Reversed

The disorder in your life scatters your focus and leads to mistakes. You may question your choices, grow frustrated with the idea of studying abroad, or even envy others’ success. If you don’t address your inner fears and insecurities, your perspective will narrow and your mindset will close. You may want to confide in others yet become stubborn or irritable when hearing their advice, which only isolates you further and complicates things.

4. "Death" Reversed

Your desire to study abroad comes from wanting to reinvent how others see you and affirm your self-worth. You may have faced major setbacks in school or at work, leading to a long low period. Fortunately, reversed Death signals “new beginnings” and “resurrection,” helping you cut ties with the past, replan your future, and create a fresh start.

5. "The Fool" Upright

You’re drawn to new experiences and plans, and rather than blazing a trail, you may be rushing in without considering the consequences. While you secured admission, inadequate planning and overlooking practical realities led to financial strain. You know going abroad without sufficient funds is risky, yet you’re determined to pursue your dream despite the money worries.

6. "The Emperor" Upright

The upright Emperor represents boldness and firm resolve. It suggests you’ll define clear goals, take charge, and secure steady income. In the near term, you’re likely to land a well-paying job that, while you’ll shoulder it on your own, will ease your financial burden and build independence. Establish order in your daily life and proactively seek income—these should be your priorities now.

7. "The Sun" Upright

The upright Sun points to successful growth and a happy outcome with support from many. In your heart, you’re aiming for a bright future, and studying abroad feels hopeful. You’ll enhance your abilities, unlock your potential, and gain recognition from family and society. Despite challenges and practical hurdles, you trust you can overcome them and move toward your goal.

8. "The Hierophant" Upright

The upright Hierophant indicates outside help and the guidance of good mentors. Your environment—including family and friends—is inclined to support you. If you can set aside stubbornness and talk openly about your difficulties, you’ll receive useful advice and likely material or financial assistance too.

9. "The Wheel of Fortune" Upright

The upright Wheel of Fortune signals unexpected good news and a turn of luck, reflecting a shift in your approach that invites better outcomes. You’ve decided to change tactics, act proactively, and tackle the problem again. Though the situation is unstable, you’re learning to make timely decisions when opportunities arise and to reframe challenges, turning disadvantages into advantages.

10. "The Devil" Reversed

Reversed, this card shows you breaking free from mental shackles and refusing to stay in chaos. You’ve decided to regroup and face your problems rather than stall with excuses. Securing tuition may be hard, and restoring order takes courage and resolve, but you can reclaim your confidence, free your mind and spirit, and move successfully toward your goal of studying abroad.
