The Complete Guide to Tarot Spreads: The Key Layout Method

Tarot is a Western form of divination. Today, many young people enjoy this practice to explore questions about love or career prospects. While often treated as a game, tarot involves more nuance than other fortune-telling methods, including the choice of spread and the querent’s intent. This article introduces a tarot spread used in tarot divination—the “Key Spread,” which primarily addresses general questions about the future.
How to Select the Cards:
The querent divides the Major Arcana into two piles and intuitively designates one as “active” and the other as “passive.” The reader then draws 3 cards from the active pile (positions 1–3) and 4 cards from the passive pile (positions 4–7), and arranges them. The querent then draws the 8th card. Place all 8 cards in the positions shown in the image above. The reader interprets the spread intuitively, keeping in mind that each position in the layout corresponds to a specific aspect of the answer.
- The querent’s situation regarding the question.
- Favorable circumstances and conditions.
- People who will assist the querent.
- The past.
- Recent events.
- Unfavorable conditions and obstacles.
- People who may oppose the querent.
- The key card—the divination answer and the likely future.
