What Your Facial Features May Reveal About Your Health
In traditional Chinese thought, everything in the universe is composed of five elements, and people are influenced by the energies of these elements. The body’s five major organs are also mapped to them: the liver to wood, the lungs to metal, the heart to fire, the kidneys to water, and the spleen and stomach to earth. The five facial features are likewise linked to the five elements and correspond to these organs. Thus, the state of one’s organs is believed to be reflected in the face. By observing facial features and complexion, one may gain clues about potential health concerns.
1. Sudden Increase in Forehead Wrinkles
A sudden uptick in forehead wrinkles is seen as a sign that the liver is under strain. Try cutting back on animal fats (such as pork) and choose lighter options like spinach, tofu, and fish.
2. Dark Circles and Dull Complexion
Waking up with dark circles under the eyes and a dull complexion is thought to suggest the kidneys are overtaxed. Reduce your salt and sugar intake, avoiding added sugar whenever possible. Dishes like duck with chestnuts and braised cabbage may be helpful. Pork kidney soup is also traditionally used.
3. Red Nose
The tip of the nose is associated with the heart. If it appears red or purplish, it may point to high blood pressure or overconsumption of salt and alcohol, so be mindful of these factors.
4. Swollen Upper Lip
A swollen upper lip is often attributed to stomach spasms. Eat more warming foods such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, chestnuts, yams, and lotus root. If your skin is excessively rough, consider soups made with bamboo shoots, sea cucumbers, and lean meat.
5. Excessively Pale Skin
This may reflect a deficiency of qi and blood. Soak red dates and peanuts in warm water, then simmer over low heat, adding honey until it thickens. Regular consumption of this tonic is believed to gradually improve the complexion.
6. Brownish-Red Cheeks
Redness in the cheeks can be a sign of high blood pressure. Try to reduce smoking and aim to quit altogether, and monitor your blood pressure regularly.
7. Red Ears
The ears are linked to the kidneys. If the earlobes appear red or purplish, it suggests poor circulation. Reduce alcohol consumption, limit refined foods and sugars, and get more physical activity to promote circulation.
