Ruihua was diagnosed with narcolepsy in 2014. Although she managed her condition with medication, her daytime symptoms remained challenging. As her dosage increased, she started feeling indescribable discomfort.

From Atheism to Belief: An Agnostic's Near-Death Experience

During this time, Ruihua was involved in a car accident that led her to rehabilitation, where her physical pain worsened. After discussing her condition with her previous doctor, she consulted a cardiologist who answered her concerns regarding increasing her medication dosage and its potential side effects. The cardiologist scheduled her for a "tilt table test" to examine physiological changes and assess her risk of fainting.

A few days later, while undergoing the test, Ruihua suddenly experienced a rapid heartbeat, vibrations, and then cardiac arrest. In that moment, she entered a dreamlike state. The surroundings resembled Dadaocheng in Taipei, and she found herself under an arcade, where several young men smoked and conversed, appearing anxious, though their words were unclear. Turning a corner, she met a figure she couldn't see clearly but whose back resembled her late grandfather, who guided her away. This figure spoke to a gatekeeper from another realm—a being with a hat and spear, appearing both vivid and blurry—discussing her situation and emphasizing the urgency to leave. Time flowed erratically, sometimes quickening and other times stalling. She fell into a dark, elastic tunnel, shifting between darkness and light. Feeling disembodied, reduced to a mere point, she hurried toward the light, moving from confusion to a sense of understanding. Just then, a distant, indiscernible voice called out, "Come back! Hurry back!" As she puzzled over where to return to, she felt a strong push, and her consciousness snapped back to reality, where a doctor was shining a bright light in her eyes.

When Ruihua awoke, she forgot everything—not just the people around her, including her family and medical staff, but even her own name. In confusion and defensiveness, she overheard a nurse say, "We finally brought you back from the brink of death." Dismissing it as just a dream, it took time for her memory to return. She learned that her heart had stopped during the tilt table test and that the doctor performed CPR to save her. Believing it resulted from an excessive vagal reflex, the doctor advised further cardiology examinations. After resting for fifteen minutes, she left the hospital and went home.

Afterward, Ruihua experienced a disconnection between her soul and body. A sudden realization hit her: everything she had believed for over two decades was wrong, leading to the collapse of her value system. Questioning her past, she contemplated ending her life. However, just as she prepared to act on these thoughts, another realization dawned: if she could withstand such pain, why not persevere until the end? Uncertain whether her current experience was a blessing or a curse, this thought stopped her from making an irreversible decision.

During a follow-up cardiology visit, the doctor mentioned her case's rarity and suggested hospitalization for an electrophysiological study to check for potential heart issues. The previous day's ECG and echocardiogram showed normal heart function, and barring complications, she could be discharged the next day. However, during the examination, she experienced six seconds of ventricular fibrillation. Although she felt no discomfort, a series of numbers transported her back to the arcade scene from her near-death experience. She saw the gatekeeper again, now guided by a strange hunchbacked old woman, who called to her loudly. Responding with "Okay," the scene shifted to the present. She could not see her surroundings, only the oxygen mask, and she struggled to breathe on her own, filled with fear. Focused solely on breathing to stay alive, Ruihua couldn't comprehend what was happening. Her eyes couldn't move, her hearing was impaired, and her body was nearly immobile except for eyelid movements and chest pain. This near-death episode led to an acute stroke, requiring ice application for electrical burns. Treated in the ICU, she endured eight months of rehabilitation post-discharge. Through this ordeal, she felt detached from her body—a mix of tranquility, anxiety, and pain—that ultimately led her to believe in a higher power, transforming her from an atheist to a believer.
