Discovering the Truth About Life After a Near-Death Encounter with Serious Illness

One year, Nancy was suspected of having breast cancer and went to the hospital for a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. While she was in the X-ray examination room, a nurse administered anesthesia, but unexpectedly, Nancy had a severe allergic reaction. Her heart raced momentarily before it stopped beating.
The hospital staff immediately began emergency resuscitation efforts on Nancy. Unbeknownst to her, she was experiencing an entirely different reality. Nancy later shared that she was unaware her body was in distress. She felt as if she had suddenly "whooshed" out of her body, seeing herself seated in the examination chair, while her consciousness, or soul, stood in front of her own form.
At that moment, she observed a brilliant light and some beings that seemed to be made of light, which she called "light beings." Although she didn't recognize them from this lifetime, they felt like long-lost friends. These beings appeared to have a deep understanding of every detail of Nancy’s life.
Soon, a stream of questions flooded her mind: "What is God? Who am I? What does God expect of me? What is the meaning of life? Where is heaven? Where is hell? What is true religion?" Growing up, Nancy attended Catholic school and later a Methodist university, always considering herself a "devout seeker of spiritual truth." Yet, faced with these questions and having no answers, she was both amazed and frustrated.
This emotional turmoil was brief, as she and the light beings moved into the light. She immediately felt surrounded by an energy-filled love, experiencing immense joy and happiness. Her emotions projected into the light, returning with tenfold intensity, creating echoes or ripples filled with the most profound happiness.
Simultaneously, Nancy noticed that one emotion—fear—had disappeared. Despite being in an unfamiliar setting, she felt no fear. Typically, if Nancy found herself unable to control her environment, she would feel anxious about what could happen next. She realized for the first time how much fear dictated her human life—fear of rejection, of judgment, and of making mistakes. Recognizing fear as a mere human condition brought her relief.
Nancy then realized that the experiences, memories, emotional intelligence, and knowledge she had gained in this lifetime didn't perish with her physical body; they persisted within her eternal essence. She understood that her physical body wasn't her true self; with or without it, "I" still existed. In that moment, she gained clarity about her "true self."
Even more remarkably, Nancy realized she wasn’t just witnessing or feeling the light; she was becoming part of it. The essence of her life shone brightly, and she could see her light radiating outward.
During this near-death experience, Nancy’s spirituality continued to awaken, reviving countless personal memories, experiences, and emotions, forming what she called "my complete database." She was overwhelmed by the flood of memories from hundreds or thousands of "lives." Nancy thought she understood the church's teaching of the soul's immortality—but believed it began only after this life ended. No one had ever mentioned reincarnation. During this experience, however, she faced it firsthand. Memories from before she became "Nancy" confirmed her long existence.
Nancy even recalled her true identity—a powerful, immortal being of light, like her friends. She struggled to believe she had been so deeply lost, thinking she was simply a human.
She felt as if everyone, except herself, knew she had been sent to experience human life, as if she were completing a mission. It was akin to waking from a coma to find everyone around knew what had happened, and they eagerly awaited her return to consciousness.
As Nancy awakened, or as she put it, "recovered the memory and knowledge of my true self," vast universal knowledge "came uninvited" into her mind. Questions about our existence, purpose, and God filled her thoughts. Ultimately, she grasped the essence of life.
With the light beings, Nancy traversed a powerful energy field, arriving at what she described as the "Source"—the origin of the universe. This "Source," she believed, went by different names across cultures, such as God or Creator.
Nancy revealed that the "Source" shared with her the mysteries and purpose of existence, helping her understand that she, and everyone else, is a part of this "Source." We are all interconnected, meaning "all things originate from the same source and are one." People temporarily experience life in human form, much like roles in a dream. When the body perishes, people awaken from the earthly dream, returning to the spiritual source.
Nancy said that our belief in being humans with souls is only partially accurate. We are beings of light dwelling in human bodies, existing as light and love. When our bodies die, we awaken to this identity. It’s like a phoenix filled with love, happiness, and nobility, yet living as a mere chicken in the mundane world, having forgotten its true identity and nature. Awakened people consciously choose to shed this amnesia and recognize their true nature.
She referred to our human way of thinking as the "human mode." If we recognized our connection to the "Source" and to God, she said, humanity would transcend conflict, aggression, drama, unease, unhappiness, and even disease. The love from the "Source" is warm, joyful, unconditional, and overwhelming. It's a love that those in "human mode" cannot fully comprehend. Our Creator loves every aspect of creation more intensely than the sun’s brilliance. Earth's purpose is to learn, gain enlightenment, effect positive change, and serve others. Our mission is to learn and practice unconditional love and forgiveness in challenging situations, reconnecting with the Creator.
Regarding concepts of "heaven" and "hell" she learned in church, Nancy gained new insights. She stated that people often ask, "Where is heaven?" In reality, there's no "where." Heaven isn't a place; it’s a process, not a destination.
Nancy personally experienced that as a being of light, she possessed a special ability to shape reality. What does this mean? She explained that by imagining an environment in the light, she could bring it into existence with a thought. As light beings, they could create their own heaven, meaning its appearance differed for each person, but everyone could feel unconditional love, happiness, and joy, feeling as if they returned "home" as they approached the "Source."
Similarly, the concept of "hell" was analogous. During her life review, Nancy reflected on her wrongdoings, experiencing the pain she inflicted on others. The intense regret and guilt felt like hell. Those who committed grave acts would experience different feelings.
Although Nancy wished to continue as a being of light, her earthly mission was incomplete, and her lessons about love were unfinished, so she had to return to her body. This transition seemed to take mere seconds. Nancy experienced herself gradually losing her true nature, feeling her consciousness peel away layer by layer. Despite her resistance and desire to retain her memories and regained cosmic knowledge, it was in vain.
In 2001, Nancy fell gravely ill again, experiencing another near-death incident. When she reunited with the light beings, they allowed her to decide whether to stay or return. They warned that choosing the earthly realm meant facing an "extremely difficult" time, with ongoing pain and physical weakness.
This time, however, Nancy chose to return to fulfill her mission from the "Source." She wanted to share her insights with everyone and offer a crucial message to those facing death: "Focus on love—for all the people you've loved, for places where you've felt love, for events that have brought you joy, and for the happiness you hope to find after crossing over." Ultimately, everyone returns to their true home and unconditional love. When someone passes, they leave pain and sorrow behind but carry love and cherished memories forward. Nancy believes a person's life exists simultaneously in the earthly and spiritual realms; even if separated from loved ones, they will reunite in the spiritual realm.
