Six Ways to Understand Life Through Observation

I. The Eyes Reveal Character

In physiognomy, the primary way to read a person's character is through their eyes. As the saying goes, "kind eyes reflect a kind heart, while malicious eyes reflect a malicious heart." Eyes that are misaligned or that wander—such as eyes that cross, roll, or dart up and down—suggest an unsettled mind. People with harsh or unkind eyes often seem emotionally detached, so it is wise to keep a respectful distance. Eyes can appear in many forms—red, yellow, greenish, bulging, sunken, and more—but the core principle is that the whites should be bright and distinct, with clear, steady sight.

Red Eyes: Red veins in the whites of the eyes suggest overindulgence in alcohol or other excesses. If paired with darker skin, it may point to depleted vitality and physical exhaustion. In older adults, pronounced red veins often signal disputes over property or family matters that lead to inner turmoil or resentment. In fair-skinned individuals who do not drink, red veins can result from late nights and may reflect a physiological imbalance related to lung heat.

Yellow Eyes: Slightly yellow-tinged whites often indicate weaker health. This is common among those who stay up late or whose emotions are unstable, and it may affect liver function. Such individuals may struggle to distinguish good influences from bad and often mix with people from all walks of life.

Green Eyes: A greenish cast in the whites suggests poorer health. A faint greenish hue can be normal in children under five. If it persists beyond age ten, it may indicate health issues or overmedication. In a healthy child, a greenish tint can point to difficulties in the father's career or emotional instability.

Bulging Eyes: Prominent, bulging eyes signal a strong-willed person who does not submit easily. If the whites are red, it suggests a lack of compassion and a fearless attitude toward risk. When paired with a prominent nose and sharp jawline, stubbornness may be marked. Bulging eyes with yellowish whites can suggest hormonal imbalance.

Pig Eyes: Cloudy, indistinct pupils suggest a solitary life. Even with children, there may be emotional distance or separation.

Triangular Eyes: Sharp, triangular-looking eyes point to determination and strong will, often reflecting a forceful inner nature and intense emotions. In men, triangular eyes with a prominent nose may signal marital friction. People with triangular eyes may also be more prone to accidents or surgeries in old age; cultivating patience and tolerance can help ease tensions.

Male-Female Eyes: Eyes of uneven size—one larger than the other—are called male-female eyes. Such people tend to excel in business and strategy. With a fine forehead and well-defined jawline, they are likely to succeed in commerce.

Crossed Eyes: Those with crossed eyes are often combative, proud, and strong-willed, reluctant to admit mistakes and highly self-regarding. Similar traits may appear in their family line.

Wheel Eyes: Slightly lighter-colored pupils, with a glimmer that radiates like a web or a tire pattern, suggest difficulty letting go emotionally and a tendency toward fixation. With a coarse voice and prominent nose, they may react explosively to romantic setbacks; with a gentle voice and fair skin, they may turn that distress inward.

Four White Eyes: A traditional saying holds that people with “four white eyes” (whites visible on all sides) are born under adverse conditions or external pressure, even during storms or lightning. They often carry anxiety, show strong self-protection, can be self-centered and cool in manner, and are hard for others to read. They tend toward reclusiveness and may disregard others’ views, showing little awareness of moral or legal boundaries.

Upper Three White Eyes: Quick to respond and strong-willed, these individuals are not easily swayed and stick to their decisions. Marriage may be strained, leading to emotional distance and potential conflict; cultivating inner calm and mutual understanding is advisable.

Lower Three White Eyes: Similar in disposition to those with upper three whites, but if the skin is darker and the voice strong, the intensity may be greater. This also suggests a forceful, assertive streak in previous generations. In men, lower three whites can indicate strong sexual desire; in women, boldness and courage—traits often found in artistic photographers. If the figure is well-proportioned, they can possess striking charm, reminiscent of Princess Diana. When paired with a bony, prominent nose, they may be more secretive and cunning.

Glancing Eyes: When looking at someone head-on, if the gaze shifts sideways, it suggests a person who is hard to read—strategic and secretive. In romance, they keep confidences well. With well-balanced features, they have a higher chance of becoming known.

Stealthy Eyes: Similar to glancing eyes but more furtive and unpredictable. This points to intelligence and cleverness; however, with poorly balanced features, they may struggle to keep an even keel and may harbor ulterior motives, seeking quick gains by questionable means.

Upward-Gazing Eyes: In men, an upward gaze signifies confidence and pride, and with well-proportioned features, a broad outlook. In women, it can reflect a touch of arrogance and superiority, a tendency to underestimate others, and shallower relationships.

Downward-Gazing Eyes: In men, a downward gaze suggests cunning and hidden plans. In women, it points to shyness or modesty. Paired with a weak voice and poor complexion, it can indicate low self-confidence.

Squinting Eyes: This suggests disdain and makes it hard to win others’ trust. Such people often cannot tolerate others surpassing them, harboring jealousy and resentment. They typically struggle to accumulate wealth, and their partners may tend toward vanity. If squinting eyes come with a low nose, resentment may be even stronger.

Large Round Eyes: Large, round eyes suggest quick comprehension, rapid reactions, and passionate feelings. Dull or lifeless eyes are an exception. Large but listless eyes may miss key points and appear overly suspicious. Slender eyes paired with well-groomed eyebrows indicate talent and intelligence and improve the odds of success.

Steady Gaze: Eyes that project calm strength—like those of a wise monk—indicate focus and composure. People with a steady gaze typically have a strong sixth sense and a high degree of authenticity.

II. The Importance of Eyes in Recognizing Nobility

It is said that noble people have noble eyes; there are no examples of the truly eminent with dull, lifeless eyes. As the saying goes, "Bright, spirited eyes signal nobility." When assessing someone’s eyes, first look at the gaze: it should be dignified and warm. Next, consider the shape: favorable eyes are long and well-defined, with clear whites and balanced proportions above and below.

III. The Nose Indicates Wealth

The saying "wealth lies in the nose" highlights the nose’s central role in physiognomy. The nose is the “central peak,” a leader among facial features. In women, the nose can reflect a partner’s social standing. The nose is divided into four sections: the bridge, the root, the upper section, and the tip, with the sides known as “Lan Tai” and “Ting Wei” (the left and right nostrils). To understand “wealth lies in the nose,” you must also read the bridge, upper section, tip, and overall nose shape.

The nose reflects one’s inner world and social status, especially between ages 41 and 50. However, a beautiful, prominent nose alone does not guarantee wealth; it must be considered alongside the rest of the face for a balanced judgment.

The nose, called the “central peak,” is associated with the earth element. Traditionally, “where there is earth, there is wealth,” so the nose is often called the “wealth palace.” Although some consider the “heavenly warehouse” and “earthly platform” to be wealth palaces, the nose is most commonly regarded as such. In general, a well-shaped, prominent nose with well-defined nostrils suggests a favorable material life and strong inner resources.

More finely put: the flesh of the nose symbolizes material wealth, while the bone structure reflects spiritual wealth. You can glean whether someone prioritizes inner fulfillment or material enjoyment from the nose. The size and visibility of the nostrils hint at money management and spending habits: larger nostrils suggest generosity; smaller ones suggest frugality—but this must be judged with the rest of the face. A good nose must harmonize with other features to indicate wealth. Ideally, the nose has a slightly yellow, healthy glow; if it appears red or gray-black, gaining wealth may be more difficult.

The Bridge: A high bridge indicates a determined person with strong self-awareness and pride. A low bridge suggests more diffuse self-awareness and a somewhat indecisive nature, though often emotionally warm.

A low bridge and low nose often suggest that the previous generation worked hard with modest results—though this must be read with other features. People with a low bridge and low nose are typically enthusiastic and curious but can attract gossip, especially with darker skin. Avoid meddling in others’ affairs. With a full jawline, they usually have a wide circle and enjoy helping others.

Women with low bridges often have partners who are stubborn and strongly masculine. If a low bridge is paired with a bluish tint across the nose, it may point to digestive or bronchial issues. In a couple, the high-nosed partner often leads the low-nosed partner, especially if the former has a strong voice.

Upper and Lower Parts: Referring to the midsection of the nose: if the upper and lower parts are red, it suggests strenuous effort to pursue wealth, rising internal heat, and impatience—signs of immaturity in dealing with the world. If these areas look blackish or bluish and the voice is weak, it may indicate worry and distress affecting health; a strong or coarse voice lessens concern. If the midsection is too low and the cheekbones are prominent, accident risk rises—exercise caution when driving or riding. Moles here may signal future trouble and must be read with other features. A low, dark-hued nose suggests a painful home life and financial strain, breeding resentment.

The nose also corresponds to the “palace of illness.” Excessive bluish tones can point to gastrointestinal issues, so mind your health. A prominent nose with a coarse voice can indicate marital friction and a need for mutual patience.

The Tip: A full, well-defined tip suggests stable finances. A slightly low bridge with an evenly proportioned nose brings good luck in money matters. An overly large tip can indicate difficulty letting go of desire, creating attachment to wealth. A sharp, thin tip suggests a calculating, self-serving nature. A low tip indicates childlike innocence and forgetfulness. A red tip suggests restlessness; if persistently red, it may signal loneliness in old age and weaker bonds with children. A bluish tint hints at financial loss. Visible nose hairs should be trimmed to avoid money leaks and overspending.

Lan Tai and Ting Wei: The left nostril is Lan Tai, the right is Ting Wei. Ideally, they are rounded and slightly fleshy to attract wealth, avoiding thin, protruding, or overly large nostrils. Reddish sides around the nostrils can signal gastrointestinal issues; reduce sweets.

High Nose: A high nose indicates rule-following, rationality, strong will, and directness—sometimes to the point of stubbornness. With a coarse voice and dark skin, impulsiveness may lead to independence, resistance to advice, and a blunt manner with strong self-esteem. A full jawline adds calm in emergencies. With fairer skin, a high nose can suggest self-centeredness, disinterest in trifles, and a strong sense of superiority—stubborn unless criticisms are backed by evidence or data.

The higher the nose, the stronger the self-esteem. If the nose is prominent and the eyebrows sit low, it can indicate aggression or a desire to dominate, as seen in some regions of the Middle East. If the nose is excessively high, unless the person has truly strong abilities or specialized skills, they may end up isolated, facing difficulties and a lack of support. Fair-skinned women with high noses may impose restrictions on their husbands; women with lower noses are less likely to control their partners. With dark skin and a weak voice, a person may remain single.

In general, those with high noses, well-defined bridges, and fair skin tend to have fewer children, as commonly observed in some Western countries. Those with lower noses and darker skin tend to have more children, as seen in certain lower-income regions of Africa.

Low Nose: A low nose signals tolerance, but feelings may outweigh reason. People with low noses often show unquestioning faith and may lean toward polytheistic beliefs, with lower vigilance—making them less suited to investing or partnerships and more prone to losses. They do best in familiar environments and struggle in unfamiliar ones.

People with low noses are generally easy to negotiate with, clever, and not always good at self-protection, sometimes disregarding rules. For pride’s sake, they may refuse to admit mistakes. A low nose with dark skin and a thin, coarse voice suggests a hard-working life and possible marital strife. Those with low noses often endure hardship but possess resilience and adaptability. In arguments, they may revisit old grievances. Women with dark skin, coarse voices, and low noses may be particularly unyielding in disputes, showing little mercy—especially toward their husbands. Women with low noses may have partners who are unrealistic and prone to exaggeration, making career success harder to achieve. That said, people with low noses often have stronger reproductive capacity than those with high noses, leading to larger families—especially when paired with darker skin—bringing greater blessings.

IV. The Cheekbones Indicate Power

“Cheekbones” are synonymous with “power.” Their form reveals drive, responsibility, ambition, and social activity—traits that shape one’s status and authority. People with well-defined cheekbones are more likely to hold real power in their careers. Ideally, cheekbones are rounded yet prominent, with clear structure—neither sunken nor jutting sharply.

V. The Ears Indicate Fortune

Is a person at peace, living comfortably and enjoying good fortune? Beautiful ears often say yes. That said, the wealthy and influential do not always have attractive ears—and may not be happy; while ordinary people with beautiful ears can lead very happy lives.

Those with beautiful ears tend to be calm, less attached to material things, and able to adapt—fostering health, a broad heart, joy in simplicity, and a natural attraction to good fortune. Ideal ears are thick and well-formed, lie close to the head, feel smooth, and are long and elegant in shape.

VI. The Voice Indicates Wholeness

In physiognomy, beyond the five features, one should also observe a person’s movement, posture, eating habits, and manner of speech to avoid one-sided judgments. Those who look only at the five features—ears, eyebrows, eyes, nose, and mouth—are considered mediocre readers.

Across professions, successful people typically have resonant voices, clear articulation, and balanced pacing. Thus, if someone has fine features but a poor voice, their efforts may falter, meeting obstacles and fewer favorable turns.

In any field, a strong, clear voice is preferred; weak, hoarse, or broken voices are less favorable. If someone speaks faintly or indistinctly, their message is lost or misunderstood, and their words carry little weight. Hence the emphasis on voice.

As Xunzi said: “Pile up earth and you get mountains, and wind and rain arise; gather water and you get deep pools, and dragons are born; accumulate goodness and you form virtue, and wisdom approaches the divine.” “All rise begins with a first step; honor and disgrace reflect one’s virtue.” Even if blessings have not yet arrived, misfortune will be kept at bay. One’s life lies in one’s own hands: by doing good and accumulating virtue, understanding fate and fortune, and avoiding self-pity, a bright future naturally unfolds.
