"Those who employ teachers are kings" suggests that relying on individuals who are disciplined and orderly can establish a strong foundation for a nation; in ancient times, a king represented the state, which was governed by laws. "Those who employ friends are hegemons" refers to a term where 'hegemony' initially meant the first light of the new moon, symbolizing the leaders among ancient feudal lords. It implies leadership and initiative. As for 'friends,' it denotes selfless individuals committed to taking action. Employing such people can revitalize a nation. "Those who employ apprentices are doomed" implies that 'apprentices' could signify superficiality or emptiness. According to ancient teachings, "reciting empty words while confronting real issues leads to weakened rather than strengthened efforts." Liu Heng interprets 'apprentices' as flatterers and treacherous individuals seeking revenge. If one carelessly employs such people, disaster is imminent.

When one's eyes appear sometimes lively and other times dull, it indicates a lack of concentration, a sign of kidney energy deficiency. Eyes that resemble those of a sheep are cruel and indifferent, unable to focus. These include what we commonly refer to as 'four whites' or 'three whites.' In folklore, terms like 'white-eyed wolves' or 'big white eyes' often describe people's eyes. In ancient times, it was believed that those with three or four whites in their eyes were often unkind. Such individuals tend to have destructive tendencies and extreme temperaments, attributed to excessive liver energy. Liu Heng notes that the liver connects to the eyes. Governing compassion and desire, a face lacking flesh, particularly on the cheeks, indicates a lack of familial affection and a cruel disposition. Those with these traits often indulge in romantic pursuits, becoming engrossed with desires they struggle to escape.
