What is Planetary Retrograde?

The term "retrograde" refers to the phenomenon where planets appear to move backward in the sky. In astrological charts, a planet is often marked with an "R" or "r" to indicate a retrograde period.

Planetary retrograde doesn't mean the planet is literally moving backward; rather, it results from the differing speeds and orbital periods of each planet in the solar system. From our perspective on Earth, this creates the illusion that other planets are moving backward. It's similar to when you're driving on a highway: if your car is moving faster than the car beside you, it appears as if the slower car is moving backward.

Every planet except the Sun and the Moon experiences retrograde motion. While the specific effects of retrograde vary for each planet, their retrograde periods generally follow five main phases: 1) Pre-retrograde shadow period, 2) Pre-retrograde stationary period, 3) Official retrograde period, 4) Direct motion period, and 5) Post-retrograde shadow period.

When a planet is in retrograde, it often causes us to slow down and brings unresolved issues from the past to the surface. This can lead to various events during retrograde periods, sometimes resulting in confusion and challenges in our lives.

Exploring the cycles of retrograde planets can help us become more conscious and aware of the lessons the universe is presenting to us. During retrograde, a planet's energy is directed inward rather than outward, making it a suitable time for introspection and self-reflection to uncover the roots of "cause and effect." So, don't be afraid of retrograde; every challenge that doesn't defeat us helps us grow.

The Five Stages of Planetary Retrograde

Step 1: Pre-retrograde Shadow Period: Brewing an Eruption

As shown in the diagram, each planetary retrograde cycle begins at the pre-retrograde stationary point (known as 1 station), moving retrograde until it reaches the pre-direct stationary point (known as 2 station).

1 station is the zodiac longitude where the planet begins its retrograde motion. For example, the Mercury retrograde cycle starts from 22°10' Aquarius and retrogrades to 10°22' Aquarius. In other words, 22°10' Aquarius is our 1 station, while 10°22' Aquarius is our 2 station.

However, when Mercury or any other planet is in retrograde, it doesn't just touch the stationary points once, namely 1 station or 2 station. Therefore, when Mercury first enters 2 station until it officially begins retrograde, this period is referred to as the pre-retrograde shadow period. During this time, a planet's speed has already begun to slow down, and the effects of retrograde are starting to emerge, setting the stage for the official retrograde.

Once a planet enters the retrograde shadow period, we often start to feel some disturbances, which gradually build until reaching the stationary point at 1 station, where issues become apparent, allowing us to see where we are stuck.

Step 2: Pre-retrograde Stationary Period: Intensification of Resistance

When a planet reaches 1 station, there is a brief stationary period before the actual retrograde occurs. This stationary period does not mean the planet is completely still; rather, its movement slows significantly, usually not deviating more than 10' from the exact 1 station zodiac longitude. The duration of this stationary period varies for each planet. For example, Mercury may have a stationary period of about 3-5 days, while Pluto may last around 55 days.

During this stationary period, the energy of the planet is most pronounced.

Compared to the other stages of the retrograde cycle, we feel the effects of the stationary period most acutely; it is much more noticeable than the shadow period. Due to the emphasis on "stagnation," we often feel resistance when trying to handle matters, making it difficult to achieve breakthroughs or move forward. Therefore, this phase is not conducive to starting new projects. However, unless the retrograde planet has special characteristics, like Mercury, we can use this time to learn advanced knowledge related to the mind and soul.

This period is particularly suitable for self-reflection and healing, and finding knowledge that resonates with us can greatly benefit our growth and transformation.

Step 3: Retrograde Period, A Good Time to Correct Issues

After a few days of brief stagnation, the planet begins to move slowly, entering the true retrograde phase, which is the period marked in the diagram from 1 station to 2 station.

During this time, the planet's speed is much slower than its usual direct motion, typically about a quarter of its normal speed. As the planet goes retrograde, we perceive that everything around us is slowing down, making this a prime time to address previously exposed issues. The nature of these issues varies depending on the planet's retrograde influence, which relates to the planet's significance and the frequency and duration of its retrograde cycles.

We are most familiar with Mercury retrograde, which occurs for about three months each year, approximately three times annually. Because of this, Mercury retrograde often gets blamed for any problems that arise in our lives.

In reality, Mercury's influence is not that extensive; its core concerns are primarily related to communication, interaction, transportation, and related issues. Since these matters are closely tied to our daily lives, we feel the effects of Mercury retrograde particularly strongly.

Step 4: Direct Motion Period, Taking Action and Further Adjustments

Before a planet officially goes direct, there is also a stationary period, which typically lasts 5-6 days for Mercury and about 55 days for Pluto. As mentioned earlier, this short stationary period before retrograde is similar, with the retrograde planet moving no more than 10' within 2 station during these days.

At this point, the retrograde planet has reached 2 station, the earliest position it entered during the retrograde shadow period. The planet will then experience a brief stationary period before transitioning to the post-retrograde shadow period.

In general, due to the influence of the change in the planet's direction, within a year, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn, and Jupiter will touch 1 or 2 station about 2-3 times. In contrast, outer planets like Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto may touch 1 or 2 station up to five times within three years. In such cases, the second and third touches will deepen the influence of the planet's energy.

For example, in 2021, Uranus was at its second touch of 2 station and stationary, which had a slightly greater impact compared to 2020. This was a significant turning point for us, leading to a period of awakening and acceptance of the current situation.

Facing the challenges at hand, we need to take action to correct, change, and break through. The sun always shines after the storm, bringing the dawn of a new day as we continue to strive toward our goals.

Step 5: Post-direct Shadow Period, Transforming into a New You

At this stage, the planet is in direct motion again, and the path from 2 station to 1 station is known as the post-direct shadow period. The planet slowly moves away from 1 station and begins to accelerate to its normal speed. Our experience is akin to the planet returning to the initial 2 station where it began retrograde; everything is back on track. We have completed our soul evolution lessons and have become more mature and resolute. After undergoing an inner journey of trials, the new you will emerge through this process.

The Influence of Planetary Retrograde: A Deep Connection to the Soul

Planetary Retrograde: Exposing Issues, Achieving Insights

When a planet is in retrograde, it is actually at its closest point to Earth. This signifies that the once-distant planet will establish a deeper spiritual connection with us on Earth during this period. We can absorb new knowledge throughout this process, gaining momentum in our learning and growth. If we are attempting to study or develop a subject or project, the retrograde period is an optimal time for review, reflection, and introspection.

This period also marks a soul awakening. We may become aware of issues we previously overlooked or notice hints of problems that were hidden. Through the exposure of these issues, we may gain many new insights. This period could also be a turning point in our lives. Approaching these experiences with awareness will help us break through the fog and move toward success.

Different Zodiac Signs of Retrograde: Varying Emphasis

The effects and experiences of each planet's retrograde differ for individuals. Beyond the inherent influence of the planet itself, the sign it occupies also affects its impact.

Taking Mercury retrograde as an example, it primarily concerns our thoughts, communication, transportation, and communication tools.

When it is in Aries, it may lead to impulsive communication, such as speaking without thinking or becoming overly impatient in conversations, causing disputes. In classical astrology, the energy levels exhibited by a planet vary depending on the sign it occupies.

Continuing with Mercury as an example, when it is in Gemini and Virgo, it is in a state of exaltation, where Mercury's energy is at its strongest. Next is Aquarius, which is in a state of dignity, followed by varying degrees of energy expression such as triplicity and face.

Three Steps to Identify the Influence of Retrograde Planets on You

Check Aspects: Retrograde Planet Forms Aspects with Personal Chart Planets

The retrograde planet primarily lingers at 1 station and 2 station, so significant influences will occur when it forms aspects with major personal planets (Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars, Mercury) or angles (Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven, Imum Coeli) at these points.

Generally, the influence is strongest at 0°, followed by 90° and 180°, which also have strong and tense effects, while 60° and 120° are somewhat milder.

Check Houses: Retrograde Planet Enters Personal Birth Chart Houses

Similarly, since the retrograde planet primarily lingers at 1 station and 2 station, the relevant houses should cover the degrees of 1 station to 2 station. For example, if the retrograde planet enters the 1st house of the birth chart, it will significantly impact personal health, self, character, etc.

Check Ruling Planets: Ruling Planet of Birth Chart House is Retrograde

Examine your birth chart to see which house the retrograde planet rules (for instance, if Mars is retrograde and rules Scorpio and Aries, determine which house Scorpio and Aries occupy in your chart), as this will also affect the areas related to that house.

For instance, if Mercury rules the 2nd and 5th houses in the birth chart, then during Mercury retrograde, it will typically affect your income, entertainment, and children.
