How Planetary Retrogrades Affect Natal and Transit Charts
When a planet is retrograde and closer to the Sun than usual, it’s often described as afflicted or weakened. In practice, though, that planet appears closer to Earth and brighter than when it’s direct. A retrograde planet can significantly affect your life.
A planetary retrograde signals a time of review. During a Venus retrograde, you usually reassess a relationship. Venus acts like a magnet, attracting what it believes it deserves—“I want this, I want that.” Mars is responsible for taking action to get Venus “this” and “that.” If Venus and Mars aren’t communicating well—such as in a Mars-Venus square—Mars may bring back things Venus doesn’t want. A Mars-Venus square forces us to learn how to handle things we don’t yet know how to approach.
Psychologically, a retrograde suggests that the matters a planet rules turn inward or move counter to the usual flow.
Mercury seeks to understand information. Generally, Gemini goes out to gather news and brings it back for Virgo to analyze. When Mercury is retrograde, information can flood in and overwhelm you. Pause to process what’s right in front of you before heading out to gather more.
Venus craves love and appreciation. If your natal Venus is retrograde, your values and what makes you feel good become lifelong themes. Normally, Taurus teaches you to love yourself and understand why you love. When Venus is retrograde, your values and what you appreciate are colored by Libra, prompting you to seek validation from others about your worth. This never truly works, so ultimately you return to the Taurus way of thinking.
Mars wants action. When Mars is retrograde, you need to channel its energy to be less impulsive, Aries-style. Before you explode, consider the impact on those around you—a Scorpio trait. Mars retrograde is best directed toward repair and renewal.
Retrogrades of the personal planets are especially impactful because these energies are immediate and innate.
Jupiter and Saturn show the work we do to better integrate with society. Jupiter represents what we seek from life. If Jupiter is retrograde, channel its energy toward the Piscean side before Sagittarius can take full effect. Instead of studying various beliefs and ideologies to decide which to follow, seek inner inspiration (Pisces), allowing you to embrace a broader world while refining your ideals. The philosophical framework rooted in childhood needs a major overhaul.
If Saturn is retrograde, “boundaries” become a major life theme. Normally, when Saturn is direct, you go out, learn the rules, and take responsibility within agreed-upon limits. Moving to the next step—Aquarius territory—you can innovate and transform based on the foundation you’ve built. With Saturn retrograde, that “previously established foundation” doesn’t really exist; you must define your own boundaries. The only way to do that is to dismantle existing but ineffective structures. People with Saturn retrograde often struggle with authority; they need to develop Aquarian independence before they can appreciate the importance of boundaries.
Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto each govern only one zodiac sign and spend about half the year retrograde. The difference between their direct and retrograde motion isn’t very pronounced. Uranus represents those among us who want to be unique individuals, seeking independence. When Uranus is direct, it knows how to act to fulfill its aims: break rules, eliminate outdated systems, and revitalize everything. If Uranus is retrograde, its tone becomes more Capricorn-like. From an astrological perspective, if Saturn governs Capricorn and Aquarius, can Uranus also govern these two? When Uranus is direct, it’s purely Uranian—dismantling existing systems and establishing new ones. If your natal Uranus is retrograde, it’s best to reflect before entering any organization or system, attempting to reform it from within.
Planetary retrogrades can be opportunities to fix past mistakes. There are usually signs around a retrograde that clearly indicate what needs to be reasonably reevaluated.
When personal planets are retrograde, it affects each of us. Saturn goes retrograde for a long stretch each year, and its retrograde is less personally acute. However, since Saturn is a social planet, its retrograde still asks everyone to slow down, reflect, reassess, rebuild, and make internal changes; otherwise, Saturn retrograde can become controlling, rigid, and cold. This period isn’t ideal for charging ahead.
When Mercury is retrograde, address the issues at hand before hastily exploring new directions. Your car may break down—there were probably signs before the retrograde; you just didn’t notice. Pause and align your pace so that when Mercury goes direct, you can move forward clearly and lightly.
When Venus is retrograde, reevaluate what you truly want regarding yourself and your romantic life. What you longed for last year may not be what you want this year. Or you may meet your “true soulmate” and realize you never fully understood what a romantic relationship is. Life needs change; otherwise, it becomes dull. Venus retrograde is a healing time for relationships.
If you have a natal Venus retrograde and transiting Venus is also retrograde, you may feel quite good—but it’s still not the time to make commitments. Use this period for inner reflection.
If a retrograde planet lands in a house of deprivation, those in power may issue commands in ways others can’t comprehend. You may not know how to navigate this energy at first. You’ll need to experiment—trying and failing—until you find the right way, which may also transcend the ordinary course of life.
Neptune represents those who enjoy living in a dreamlike world, drawing spiritual nourishment from that realm. Neptune grants profound creativity, but its source is often shrouded in mystery. When Neptune is retrograde, pure beliefs may spread in their own way, somewhat like Neptune’s relationship with Sagittarius. You may feel called to convert to a belief system but first try to locate its philosophical roots—which may not work. For example, some people approach astrology to criticize it, only to realize that denying astrology lacks clear scientific proof. They seek ready-made answers through research, but with that approach, the answers may never be found.
If we compare Neptune to the umbilical cord connecting the divine and humanity, Pluto represents the divine constrained by its creations. Each of us is part of the collective. Our ultimate social destiny is to contribute to societal progress and the collective consciousness. Many believe that Pluto governs both Aries and Scorpio. Pluto is the planet of transformation. When Pluto is direct, we establish a new self through change (Aries). When Pluto is retrograde, we may experience a personal identity crisis, but afterward we understand how to invest our finite lives into the infinite universe.
When inner planets station direct or retrograde in the progressed chart, it’s a significant event that can consciously alter your worldview. When outer planets are direct, the situation isn’t as critical.
You may experience a dramatic shift in your views on love, even if you’re still young that year.
