The Role of Eyebrows in Physiognomy

Ancient texts say that “the eyebrows are the canopy of the eyes; they convey the face’s dignity, embody the essence of the sun and moon, and even distinguish the wise from the foolish.” The importance of eyebrows was not to be overlooked.

Ideally, eyebrows were described as broad, elegant, and long. Thick, unruly, or protruding brows were thought to leave a poor impression. Thin, graceful, flat, and long brows were said to signal intelligence; brows that droop low and shade the eyes suggested strong comprehension and keen powers of observation. Straight brows indicated practicality, while curved brows suggested sensitivity and an appreciation for beauty. Thick, bold brows implied strength, decisiveness, and a tendency to show off; sparse, unruly brows pointed to a fierce, stubborn nature. Brows set very close together were associated with impatience, capriciousness, and narrow-mindedness; downturned tails were seen as weak and pessimistic, while upturned tails suggested boldness and strong will.

In the past, eyebrows were classified into various types—such as Elegant Brows and Crescent Brows. Below are some of the main, commonly cited types:

1. Elegant Eyebrows: When paired with a delicate complexion, this type is truly “clear-eyed and graceful,” and considered highly desirable. People with this type are said to be talented and devoted in love, making them excellent partners for women.

2. Crescent Eyebrows: Pure, bright, and cheerful. Women with this brow type are gentle and affectionate, making them attractive to men.

3. Willow Leaf Eyebrows: These individuals may seem emotionally distant, but they are very loyal to their friends.

4. Eight-Character Eyebrows: These individuals tend to be pessimistic and are often unfaithful in love. As the saying goes, “those with eight-character eyebrows are greedy for romance.”

5. Straight Eyebrows: Such individuals are stubborn, opinionated, and have a strong sense of pride.

6. Tiger Eyebrows: These individuals are wild and brave but lack strategy, and they tend to show off.

7. Ghost Eyebrows: Thick and broad; said to reveal a ruthless nature and strong possessiveness.

8. Interrupted Eyebrows: Said to indicate weak ties with siblings and a cold heart—considered an ominous sign.

9. Intertwined Eyebrows: When the hairs cross each other, it suggests a life of poverty and misfortune. People with this type are often seen as wasteful and prone to losing their wealth.

10. Spiral Eyebrows: Often intelligent yet suspicious, vain, prone to setbacks, and inclined to be dictatorial.
