Understanding People: The Art of Seeing Through Hearts, Leaving No Hiding Place for Villains
Guanzi, a notable figure from the Warring States period, is hailed as a pioneer in military strategy and diplomacy. He mentored numerous disciples, with Su Qin, Zhang Yi, Sun Bin, and Pang Juan emerging as prominent and influential figures of the era.
Guanzi had a remarkable ability to understand people, and he distilled his lifelong experiences into eight key principles. By studying these principles diligently and capturing their core essence, one can learn to perceive people's true intentions and uncover deceit.
1. Ask about right and wrong to observe their ambitions
Inquire about their views on major moral issues to gauge their ambitions. Historically, those who accomplish great things often possess high aspirations. Someone lacking in grand ambitions, content with simply maintaining the status quo, will struggle to push themselves forward and achieve greatness.
2. Probe deeply into arguments to observe their adaptability
Examine their responses to thorough questioning on a particular issue to test their adaptability and eloquence. On the battlefield, situations shift rapidly; without exceptional adaptability, one cannot gain the upper hand in confrontations.
3. Consult them on strategies to observe their insight
Seek their strategies and responses to questions to evaluate their knowledge and perspective. Exceptional individuals must possess strategic skills; if someone has courage but lacks strategy, they will ultimately be of limited use.
4. Present them with difficulties to observe their courage
Challenge them with difficulties and observe whether they back down, thereby testing their bravery. Those aiming to achieve great things must have unwavering determination; if they retreat in the face of challenges, they are unlikely to handle significant responsibilities.
5. Observe their character when intoxicated
Watch their behavior when intoxicated. There's a saying that "the truth comes out when drunk"; in such a state, a person's true nature often emerges. Those who become reckless when drunk usually lack emotional control.
6. Test their integrity in the face of profit
Observe their reactions when presented with opportunities to benefit, to determine their integrity. If someone forsakes their principles for profit, they may eventually turn against you for gain; such individuals should be approached with caution.
7. Set expectations to observe their trustworthiness
Establish agreements and see if they fulfill them on time to assess their reliability. Trustworthiness is a fundamental aspect of character; if a person lacks basic honesty, they aren't someone you can rely on.
8. Tempt them with beauty to observe their fidelity
Use allure to test their resolve and see if they can maintain their integrity. Historically, many heroes have fallen for the charms of beauty; it's said that 90% of people cannot confidently pass this test.
