Transforming a "Suffering Face" into a "Radiant Face": A Guide

We often think that a person's looks are fixed from birth and unchangeable. However, in truth, appearance is not just about genetics; it’s closely connected to our mindset, surroundings, and life experiences.
I have observed many people, and it's astonishing how their appearance correlates with their personality and experiences. Take characters from the TV drama "The Legend of Fei" as an example. Though they share the same lineage, their appearances differ dramatically because of their varied life environments and mindsets. Li Sheng, living in the serene Forty-Eight Village, possesses a purity and determination reflected in his features due to his upright, kind, and brave nature. On the other hand, Yin Pei, driven by hatred and led down a darker path, has a face marked by hostility, stirring both pity and resentment.
The male protagonist, Xie Yun, gives us deep insights through his life journey. If consumed by hatred, he could have ended up like Yin Pei, overtaken by revenge. Instead, he chose a different route: despite facing numerous hardships, he kept kindness and optimism alive within him—a choice mirrored in his appearance.
This reminds us of the saying, "The face reflects the heart." Our emotions, expressions, and facial muscles subtly sculpt our appearance. When we're happy, our facial muscles instinctively form a smile; when we're sad, our brows furrow. These subtle shifts in expression directly mirror our inner feelings.
However, this isn’t a one-way street. Our experiences, awareness, and willpower also imprint themselves on our appearance. Someone who has faced life’s challenges and developed strong willpower often has a gaze filled with depth and wisdom. Conversely, a person full of love, kindness, and optimism often carries a smile that brings warmth like sunlight.
When discussing a person's appearance, we refer to two dimensions: "appearance" and "expression." "Appearance" involves our inherent genetic traits, while "expression" is shaped by our life experiences. It evolves with us and can even sometimes transform our "appearance." A person with an unchanging "appearance" can exhibit various "expressions," as the "heart" is fluid, swayed by emotions, experiences, and choices.
An actor's portrayal showcases this "heart." They explore a character’s inner realm, conveying those emotions genuinely to the audience. For instance, the character "Rong Mama" from our childhood memories is memorably portrayed as "malicious" in a drama. In real life, however, she might be a genuinely kind-hearted old lady, with differences arising from the stark contrast between her own mindset and the character's.
I have seen many students who didn’t undergo cosmetic surgery yet displayed a more accepting, composed, and resilient "expression" by shifting their mindset and lifestyle. This transformation occurs internally, not just externally.
Some may concentrate on external changes like hairstyles, makeup, and clothing. However, true transformation stems from inner motivation, emerging from the interplay of our thoughts, consciousness, and awareness. As our inner nature transforms, our outward expressions follow suit.
Therefore, it's crucial to appreciate, accept, and understand ourselves. Only then will we truly radiate our unique "expression." This "expression" is more than just an external display; it’s a faithful reflection of our inner world.
Finally, may we all fill ourselves with love, let our "hearts" shine brightly, and project a harmonious and graceful "expression." For in this world, the most beautiful appearance is not something we inherit but something crafted by our own hands.
