How to Choose a Lucky Wedding Date, According to Astrology
1. Consider Both Parties' Natal Charts (If Available)
1. If both partners’ natal charts show favorable indicators for marriage, picking an exact wedding date is less critical. People with strong natal marriage indicators can almost choose any date and still be fine, while those with average or weak indicators should be more careful, as a well-chosen date can at least reduce many risks.
2. Marital prospects in a natal chart are assessed mainly through the marriage-related planets: the Sun (often representing the man), the Moon (often representing the woman), Venus (love and marriage), the ruler of the 1st house and any planets in the 1st, and the ruler of the 7th house and any planets in the 7th. Evaluate their auspiciousness and strength (see Appendix 1 for planetary placements).
(1) Ideally, these planets should be in exaltation or otherwise strongly placed;
(2) They should preferably not be in the 6th, 8th, or 12th houses;
(3) Even if the above two conditions are not met, if two planets are in each other’s exalted or strong signs (mutual reception), that still enhances auspiciousness. (For example, Mars in Libra and Venus in Scorpio: even if both are weakened there, because Mars in Scorpio and Venus in Libra are strong, the mutual support increases favorability.)
(4) These marriage-related planets should ideally form favorable aspects with one another and with benefics (Venus, Jupiter, Moon), and avoid aspects to malefics (Mars, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) as much as possible.
3. Comparing Both Charts
(1) Ideally, the marriage-related planets (such as the Sun/Moon/Venus, and the rulers of the 1st and 7th houses) should form favorable aspects with each other across both charts.
(2) It’s preferable that the two Moons are not in opposite signs (e.g., Moon in Aries vs. Moon in Libra; Moon in Taurus vs. Moon in Scorpio, etc.).
(3) If one person’s Moon is on/above the horizon (i.e., in the 7th–12th houses), they tend to promote harmony in the relationship. If both Moons are on/above the horizon, even if separation occurs, reconciliation may be likely (this is for reference only and not absolute).
4. For detailed analysis of natal and comparative charts, please consult specialized materials, as that is beyond the scope of this article.
2. Factors to Consider When Choosing a Wedding Date
The “wedding chart” is the astrological chart cast for the exact moment of your marriage. For example, if you marry on August 10, 2010, at 3:00 PM, that chart is your wedding chart. This article focuses on how to choose a good time to marry to foster a happier, more stable union—or at least to mitigate risks when natal marriage indicators are weak. (Note: Depending on local practice, both the time of obtaining the marriage certificate and the start time of the wedding banquet can be used for the wedding chart; in my experience, both generally match real-life outcomes.)
1. In a wedding chart, the Moon’s condition is crucial; it must be well placed and not afflicted. Keep the following in mind:
(1) The Moon should not be in its fall or detriment, such as Scorpio or Capricorn.
(2) It’s best to marry during the waxing Moon (i.e., between the new and full Moon, corresponding roughly to days 1–15 of the lunar month in the Chinese calendar).
(3) The Moon should not aspect malefics (Mars, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto), even by harmonious aspect. If unavoidable, choose a time when the aspect is separating, not applying. Favor supportive aspects to benefics (Venus, Jupiter).
(4) Avoid placing the Moon in the 6th, 8th, or 12th houses.
(5) The Moon’s sign and its influence on marriage (the Ascendant or Venus in these signs can be used for reference as well):
- Aries — Unfavorable
- Taurus — Unfavorable in the final 10 degrees; best in the middle 11–20 degrees.
- Gemini — Unfavorable in the last 15 degrees. (Note: Astrologers differ on whether the first or last 15 degrees are unfavorable, with more favoring the latter. I consider the last 15 degrees to be ruled by malefics, while the first 15 are benefic or neutral, so the final 15 degrees are likely unfavorable.)
- Cancer — Favorable for remarriage; unfavorable for a first marriage.
- Leo — Favorable for marriage, but there may be issues with extravagance around property or financial deception.
- Virgo — Favorable for remarriage; unfavorable for a first marriage.
- Libra — Favorable for confessions, proposals, and engagements, but unfavorable for formal marriage.
- Scorpio — Favorable in the first 15 degrees (best for first marriages or for marrying a woman of lower status or fewer resources than the man), unfavorable in the last 15 degrees. (Preferably avoid a Scorpio Ascendant.)
- Sagittarius — Neutral overall; not especially favorable or unfavorable, though the couple may experience many ups and downs.
- Capricorn — Unfavorable in the first 10 degrees; favorable for marriage in the last 20 degrees (11–30), though the number of children may be limited. The last 20 degrees are best for remarriage or for marrying a woman of lower status than the man.
- Aquarius — Unfavorable for marriage; may indicate a strong-willed, noncompliant wife (PS: This may be viewed less negatively in today’s context.)
- Pisces — Favorable for marriage. It may make the wife likable but also more talkative (which can manifest positively as frequent calls and conversations between spouses).
- Supplement — Because the Ascendant reflects the overall stability of the marriage, it’s best in a fixed sign (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius; avoid Scorpio). Sagittarius is also acceptable but may bring more change.
2. In the wedding chart, the 1st house and its ruler, the Sun, the Moon, and the last planet to perfect an aspect represent the man. The 7th house and its ruler, Venus, and the next planet about to perfect an aspect represent the woman.
3. Try to ensure the planets and house conditions mentioned in (2) are favorable (refer to the criteria in “1.2”). If difficult aspects to malefics are unavoidable, mitigate them where possible (for example, choose a time when the malefic aspect is separating; allow benefics to aspect the two malefics; or use mutual reception to bolster two otherwise weak planets, etc.).
4. The 10th house, its ruler, planets within it, and planets aspecting the 10th cusp or its ruler signify events that will occur between the two individuals, whether favorable or not. The 4th house, its ruler, planets within it, and planets aspecting the 4th cusp or its ruler symbolize events and outcomes within the marriage itself. Choose a time that maximizes auspicious factors and minimizes inauspicious ones.
5. Comparing the wedding chart with both natal charts shows each person’s feelings about the marriage and how the marriage will affect each of them.
3. Influence of the Wedding Chart on Children
1. In the wedding chart, Mercury is the primary significator of children, along with the condition of the 5th house and its ruler.
2. Mercury/the 5th-house ruler should not be in fall or detriment (see Appendix), should avoid unfavorable houses (4th, 8th, 12th—the 4th is the 12th from the 5th), and should not aspect malefics (if unavoidable, choose a separating aspect). It’s also best to avoid aspects with planets in fall/detriment (even if they are benefics).
3. Mercury/the 5th-house ruler should ideally aspect benefics or be in fertile signs (Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio).
4. If benefics are near the 10th house or Midheaven, conception is likely soon after marriage (assuming the couple desires it).
5. If the ruler of the 10th house is in the 9th house, conception is unlikely in the first month.
