How Do Eye Features Influence a Person's Destiny?

Every living person is a blend of essence and spirit. However, in the context of the I Ching, "spirit" does not refer to the modern notion of consciousness. Rather, it is considered a concept within the realm of materiality, effectively a summary of the material form of Qi.

According to ancient wisdom, heaven produces water that becomes essence in matter, while earth produces fire that becomes spirit within matter. A person's movements reflect their spirit, yet to truly see a person's spirit, one must observe their eyes. The eyes are linked to the liver, which corresponds to the wood element and is nourished by essence and Qi. Wood can generate fire, which, when externalized, manifests as spirit. It is believed that all of a person's essence is concentrated in their eyes. By examining the quality of a person's gaze – in both expression and spirit – one can discern their life path, determining their potential for honor or disgrace, fortune or misfortune; indeed, the quality of their gaze might even dictate the level of their life.

The quality of a person’s gaze can be specifically categorized as follows:

I. Top Quality - Three Types

1. The Hidden Spirit

This type of gaze may initially appear calm and unassuming, but it gradually reveals a natural brilliance over time. It is akin to a fine jade or pearl, with depth that becomes more exquisite the longer one observes. This gaze is pure and serene, commanding quiet authority without anger. Its brilliance is concealed when not in use, but it shines brightly when activated. Individuals who possess this quality of gaze are likely to have undergone profound personal development, and as a result, they are destined to achieve extraordinary accomplishments during their lifetime.

2. The Tranquil Spirit

Some individuals’ eyes seem initially serene, and on closer look, they reflect a profound inner calm and detachment. The spirit within them is deeply hidden and enigmatic, understood intuitively rather than expressed in words. People with this quality of gaze often possess exceptional talent, rising above the ordinary. If they pursue wisdom, they naturally align with the philosophies of Laozi and Zhuangzi.

3. The Harmonious Spirit

A gaze characterized by tranquility, purity, and gentleness is notable. These individuals, even in the absence of joyful events, often appear cheerful, or they remain calm even when angry. A person with such a gaze likely possesses a broad mind, free from jealousy and extremism. Easily approachable, they embody the qualities of a modest gentleman, leading to a life of happiness and good fortune, with the potential for significant achievements.

II. Medium Quality - Six Types

1. The Sharp Spirit

Some people have a steadfast and direct character, with a gaze that is sharp and imposing. They may exhibit obsessive traits, and their speech can be cutting, easily offending others. Despite attempting to appear modest, they often seem arrogant. This sharpness can provide courage and confidence, aiding in career advancement; with some restraint, they can achieve remarkable success. However, without restraint, they risk offending others, leading to conflicts or even disasters. Since sharpness is not enduring and fades over time, these individuals may experience a decline in willpower as they age, placing them in the medium quality category.

2. The Restless Spirit

This type of gaze alternates suddenly between stillness and dynamism, like a galloping horse, or a usually calm gaze may burst forth uncontrollably, appearing frenzied. Such individuals often face significant career ups and downs and many setbacks. While they might not possess notable skills, they qualify as medium quality.

3. The Revealing Spirit

Eyes that are noticeably protruding often reveal the spirit easily, or their expression might carry hostility. This gaze is typically complex and may involve “four whites” or “three whites.” Without these, the individual may encounter danger or even premature death. Even with wealth, misfortune can strike if not counterbalanced by high-arched crescent-shaped eyebrows, which could instead signify great blessings.

4. The Startled Spirit

Insufficient mental energy causes startlement. Some might appear perpetually anxious and restless, with a lost demeanor. Such individuals may display clouded expressions, experience sleeplessness, and have difficulty relaxing. Their mouths may seem to move constantly, as if talking to themselves, and their eyes dart around. This is regarded as a foolish demeanor. Wealthy individuals with this gaze may still face premature death. Even though they might not achieve great success, they tend not to make serious mistakes, qualifying them as medium quality.

5. The Slow Spirit

Slowness reflects a middle ground between action and stillness. When observing, these individuals might stare blankly for extended periods. Even in urgent situations, their gaze remains slow and dull. Such individuals often possess narrow-mindedness, hindering their potential for great accomplishments. However, their cautious nature helps them avoid significant errors, ensuring peace.

6. The Doubtful Spirit

Excessive worry and indecision lead to doubt. Those with this quality seem contemplative, often hesitating to act or speak. Their expressions frequently change, reflecting a natural fear of risks and responsibilities. Throughout their lives, they struggle to establish themselves successfully and are prone to missing opportunities due to hesitation. Their inherent cautiousness and distrust of others mean they may not achieve significant feats but generally avoid major faults, classifying them as medium quality.

III. Low Quality - Five Types

1. The Indulgent Spirit

An indulgent gaze often looks downward, reminiscent of a predator stalking prey. If accompanied by “four whites” or more white than black, it suggests a natural inclination toward danger and malice, indicating a person prone to treachery and greed, likely meeting a tragic end. Prolonged downward gazing signifies a potential for lawlessness, leading to dying in desolation, categorizing such a gaze as low quality. Despite this, some individuals with this gaze might achieve significant accomplishments.

2. The Drunken Spirit

A "drunken" gaze reflects a state of perpetual stupor, with an inability to stand or sit properly, and a muddled, dazed look. Such individuals often indulge in ignorance, constantly dreaming and falling prey to their own fantasies, resulting in frequent mistakes.

3. The Dazed Spirit

A dazed individual’s eyes look clouded, with a gaze that drifts in and out of focus. Though they might seem grand, their eyes lack luster upon closer inspection. Individuals with this gaze often live confused lives, leading to poverty and low status with no fortune or wealth.

4. The Hasty Spirit

Haste manifests as an unstable gaze marked by self-satisfaction and lack of brilliance; joy does not resonate with these individuals. They may encounter bloodshed in middle age. Despite having talent, they often struggle to fully express it. If their gaze transitions from haste to calmness, their fortunes will improve.

5. The Detached Spirit

A detached gaze appears vacuous, as if the individual is a puppet. Though seemingly normal, they emit a weak aura, akin to a walking corpse. Signs of detachment suggest limited lifespan, potentially not surviving beyond a year if they have a haggard complexion.

Beyond gaze quality, the spirit and energy reflected in the eyes are crucial. Observing this spirit and energy involves focusing on the upper part of the eyes, summarized as follows:

  • A top quality gaze should be bright and refreshing, with a hint of spirit concentrated within. Possessing such a gaze, coupled with excellent demeanor, indicates a person destined for high status.
  • A clear and refined bone structure, well-proportioned features, and bright eyes suggest potential for a promising future and significant accomplishments, potentially becoming pillars of society.
  • Moreover, individuals who are clear yet not cold, or those who are murky yet possess some clarity, exhibit notable traits. Clarity indicates nobility and excellence, while murkiness conveys poverty and lowliness. However, extremes are not ideal; excessive clarity is not entirely beneficial, and heavy murkiness is not entirely detrimental.

Thus, clarity should be balanced – clear yet not cold, murky yet containing clarity. With an above-average demeanor, such individuals have the potential for wealth and nobility. If clarity is cold, it signals a lack of fortune or a stagnant life with limited opportunities; they might achieve success, only to die young. Conversely, if inherently murky coupled with coarse hair and skeletal structure, they are likely to endure hardship and poverty.
