What Facial Expressions Indicate Inner Conflict?
In the vast sea of humanity, with its countless faces, a stroll down a street full of strangers can stir all kinds of feelings. The faces you see can even reflect how content the people of a neighborhood or city are.
The clearest sign is inner turmoil. Where life is steady and secure, people look relaxed and cheerful. In contrast, where life is tense and competitive, worry often shows on their faces.
Such turmoil grows out of life’s pressures, filling the mind with restless, distracting thoughts. Everyone experiences this to some extent, but its intensity is strongly shaped by the social environment.
If the turmoil is brief, it may show as a furrowed brow and shadows along the sides of the nose. If it lasts for six months, the frown deepens and the eyes may look anxious. If it continues for three to five years or longer, it can etch lines into the forehead and tighten the facial muscles. Over time, if the environment remains unchanged, the crease between the brows grows deeper, the eye sockets look strained, a harsh look may emerge, and the overall expression reflects distress or depletion.
People who carry these signs often find life challenging. Even when their circumstances are relatively good, they may still feel dissatisfied and troubled by comparisons, which can drag down their prospects and, as some would say, leave them with an unappealing expression.
If you have the chance, spend a few minutes in a busy part of a city or along a crowded street. After watching a few dozen faces, you can glean insights into the area’s living conditions and environment, including how people relate to one another.
Are the people around you troubled? Are you? Look at your own face and reflect on your life—it will become clear what turmoil can bring.
