In traditional Chinese medicine, the liver is associated with the spring season, symbolized by the growth of trees. The liver is believed to be connected to the eyes, which are considered the windows to the soul. Thus, spring is viewed as the optimal time for nourishing the liver to enhance eyesight. This belief has led to dietary advice stressing the importance of green foods for maintaining liver health and improving vision. In physiognomy, the eyes are described as the "palace of the spirit," linked to both the liver and the heart. When we sleep, the spirit is thought to reside in the heart, and when we wake, it returns to the eyes. Therefore, a person's character and moral standing can be discerned through their gaze, which reflects the inner state and can indicate one's fortune or misfortune. In facial analysis, the eyes are referred to as "inspectors," illustrating the saying, "The three pavilions and nine officials are determined by the face, while wisdom, courage, and cowardice are reflected in the eyes."

So, how are eye characteristics determined in physiognomy? The method relies on symbolic theory. In ancient times, people compared the shapes and brightness of eyes to the physiological traits and moral qualities of animals. For example, eye shapes like phoenix eyes, elephant eyes, cow eyes, dragon eyes, crane eyes, monkey eyes, peacock eyes, mandarin duck eyes, lion eyes, and magpie eyes are considered favorable, while snake eyes, bee eyes, sheep eyes, mouse eyes, chicken eyes, pig eyes, fish eyes, horse eyes, dog eyes, crow eyes, and fox eyes are viewed as unfavorable. This has resulted in sayings like, "Chicken eyes are small and yellow, suggesting a restless and promiscuous nature. Snake eyes are venomous, and mouse eyes are associated with thievery. Dragon eyes are spiritually insightful, and tiger eyes are courageous. Cow eyes are steady and far-sighted, while horse eyes indicate diligence. Dog eyes often bring disputes, and pig eyes are greedy and miserly."

Large, round eyes signify good judgment: People with large, round eyes are generally considered to have strong personalities, clear preferences, and their own opinions. If the pupils are distinctly black and white and well-centered, it suggests intelligence and kindness, helping them quickly forge social connections.

Left eye larger than the right, enjoys food but can be annoying: The left eye symbolizes personality, while the right eye symbolizes rationality. Therefore, individuals with a larger left eye often have a strong personality and rich emotions, making them generally approachable. Women especially find it easier to get along with others. However, a smaller right eye suggests a lack of rationality, resulting in unpredictable behavior.

Conversely, those with snake-like eyes, characterized by drooping outer corners, tend to have malicious natures and a lustful disposition, often resulting in short lives due to kidney issues.

Eyes and eyebrows pointing upwards indicate longevity; protruding eyes suggest a short life: Eyebrows that slope upwards with a balanced thickness often belong to decisive individuals. If the outer corners of the eyes also point slightly upwards, it indicates a chivalrous spirit, promising descendants, and longevity. In contrast, round, protruding eyes often indicate a volatile personality, prone to conflict and aggression, leading to potential strokes or misfortunes in old age, similar to historical figures like Zhang Fei from the Three Kingdoms or Li Kui from Water Margin.

Triangular eyes should not be trusted: Those with triangular eyes and drooping outer corners are often schemers with malicious intentions. However, such individuals can rise to high positions within groups, so one must be wary of their deceitful nature.

Well-matched eyebrows and eyes lead to a good marriage: Women with elegantly arched eyebrows that extend past the outer corners of their eyes, with a suitable balance of thickness, and slightly elongated, non-protruding eyes are likely to marry capable men and establish prosperous households.

Chicken-like eyes indicate impatience: Small, round, yellow eyes are referred to as chicken eyes. Such individuals tend to be impulsive, lustful, and aggressive, making it difficult for them to navigate social situations smoothly.

Easy to speak of fortune: "The vastness of heaven and earth is illuminated by the sun and moon," with the eyes symbolizing the sun and moon in the human body. Those with long, distinct eyes, white as jade and black as lacquer, are considered auspicious. Eyes that are prominent and spirited indicate a decisive character.
