A person's heart dwells within their body, making it unseen and untouchable to others. For this reason, people often say, "The human heart is hard to gauge." Although the heart itself is invisible, one's thoughts and spirit can be communicated through various forms of body language. For example, a person's gaze can reveal their inner world. This is why it is said, "The eyes are the windows to the soul." This discussion centers on a person's gaze.

According to physiognomy, the eyes are equated to the sun and moon, similar to how these celestial bodies illuminate the Earth. They represent the essence of a person's yin and yang, vitality, and spirit. Eyes indicate the quality of a person's mental and spiritual disposition and are a manifestation of their life energy, reflecting wealth, longevity, and vitality.

Firstly, the gaze signifies vitality.

When a person is born, their eyes are wide open; at the end of life, their eyes close. A newborn's eyes are bright and clear, while those of an elderly person may appear dull and lifeless, as aging often first manifests in the eyes. Your eyes reflect your vitality, energy, and spirit.

Secondly, the gaze reflects one's mental and spiritual qualities.

A person who is upright and selfless will have bright eyes; a selfish person will have shifty eyes, avoiding direct contact; a child untouched by worldly corruption will have an innocent and pure gaze; someone experienced will be cunning and worldly; the wise will have a sparkling gaze, while the foolish will have dull, lifeless eyes.

There are four types of valuable gazes:

1. A person with a powerful gaze

This person pays meticulous attention to others and situations, resembling an eagle leaving its nest or a tiger emerging from the forest, hence the saying, "penetrating deeply." People with hidden motives usually avoid eye contact; they are precise in their judgments and, along with focusing on advancing their own career, they vigilantly guard their interests, ensuring no one oversteps them.

2. A person with long eyes and double pupils

Double pupils, also known as 重华, refer to two pupils in one eye—an unusual trait said to be possessed by ancient sages. Though rare today, people with longer eyes are more common. Those with longer eyes can see their ears, indicating high perception and understanding, making them exceptional individuals and thus considered noble individuals.

3. A person with clear black and white in their eyes

When the gaze is very clear, with few bloodshot veins and distinct separation between the whites of the eyes and pupils, it indicates a pure heart and open, honest conduct. Even in adversity, these individuals can discern right from wrong, maintaining integrity, and often receiving help from others. They themselves are regarded as noble.

4. A person with a steady gaze

A steady gaze, particularly when looking into the distance, signifies firm character and broad vision, with ideals and ambitions. These individuals are kind-hearted and upright, capable of achieving success through their efforts. They often enjoy good fortune, opportunities, and help from others, possessing noble qualities.

Conversely, gazes can also identify base and contemptible individuals. Specifically, there are several types:

1. A person with yellowish and murky eyes

Yellowish or reddened eyeballs, or indistinct black and white, suggest a murky expression. Such individuals are often foolish, struggling to distinguish right from wrong, possibly poorly educated, with few children or notable achievements. This instability indicates an impure heart, consistently harboring multiple thoughts, making it hard for them to settle down. Whatever they do, obstacles arise—for instance, being dragged down by others, unable to retain wealth, lacking proper judgment, and being indecisive in relationships, resulting in unfavorable outcomes.

2. A person with large, lifeless eyes

Those with excessively large eyes tend to be timid; lifeless eyes indicate a lack of focus. Their timidity and inattention make success elusive, and they may struggle to seize opportunities, limiting their potential wealth.

3. A person with squinting eyes

If someone's gaze is askew while sitting upright, it suggests inconsistency between their inner and outer selves, indicating hidden motives and hypocrisy, preventing them from being considered noble, regardless of success.

4. A person who looks upward

Frequent upward gazing, even at others' heads, indicates arrogance and delusion, a disregard for reality and surroundings. Such individuals may also harbor malice and look down on others, hindering their success and causing resentment towards others' achievements.

5. A person with a flickering gaze like an eagle

While their gaze is sharp, if it's flickering, it signals a suspicious and changeable personality. They are fond of risks and often possess jealousy. Despite any achievements, such characteristics prevent them from being seen as noble.

6. A person who looks around suspiciously

A gaze that frequently shifts back and forth indicates strong suspicion, leading to unstable fate, a scattered mind, and a lack of focus.

7. A person who habitually looks down

Focusing only on immediate gains and lacking long-term vision, these individuals have low confidence and are suspicious of others and their environment, often relying on cunning schemes.

The gaze not only differentiates between noble and base individuals but also reveals fortune and character, illustrated by the following examples:

1. A person with a smiling gaze

These individuals often lack ulterior motives, fostering good relationships, favorable financial luck, and many romantic opportunities, although they may encounter challenges in relationships.

2. A person with a murderous gaze

Characterized by opportunism, few friendships, but a few close allies, their careers progress slowly. They tend to anger easily and may face misfortunes, experiencing financial luck in middle age but possibly becoming reclusive later.

3. A person with a cold gaze

Often quick-witted, materialistic, with active minds, they might experience unexpected financial gains but usually have poor interpersonal relationships and unstable financial luck, sometimes harming others discreetly.

4. A person with a lewd gaze

Typically cheerful, exaggerated in behavior, adept at disguising themselves, they speak aimlessly and act unreliably. Their financial situation fluctuates, although their romantic life is usually smooth.

5. A person with a pitiful gaze

As pessimists, they are cautious, family-oriented, generally enjoying good financial luck. However, they might struggle with social interactions and face relationship challenges.

6. A person with a confident gaze

Extroverted and somewhat narcissistic, these individuals possess a petty heart. Their financial luck varies—they may start projects enthusiastically but lack follow-through, have high expectations, and generally enjoy smooth relationships.

7. A person with a fearful gaze

Typically vigilant, lacking self-confidence, with slow thinking, they experience average financial luck and might encounter bad luck, often attracting difficulties.

8. A person with an unusual gaze

Possessing some outstanding talent, they often have good romantic and financial luck, but friendships may be superficial rather than deep.

9. A person with an ostentatious gaze

With an expressive gaze and flamboyant demeanor, this often results from a lack of innate vitality and inherited weak traits. Excessive indulgence leads to energy depletion, poor health, or even the risk of premature death. Despite intelligence and eloquence, in tumultuous times, they may appear noble, but everything culminates in "lust." Excessive lust can result in a shorter lifespan and an early departure from this world.

10. A person with a commanding gaze without anger

This gaze commands respect without anger, full of energy, discouraging others from meeting their eyes directly. Such clarity seems to pierce into others' hearts. Individuals with such gazes are open-hearted and serve as pillars of society and the nation, playing positive roles in communities, and are likely to achieve great wealth and longevity.

The gaze is an expression of the heart and spirit; troubles of the heart manifest as troubles of the eyes, and healing the heart can heal the eyes. Changing one's heart and fortune is essential. Therefore, it is advised for those with pathological gazes to seek healing through Buddhist teachings.

For example, the Buddhist text "Heart Sutra" is a beneficial remedy. Recitation of the "Heart Sutra" ten thousand, or even a hundred thousand, or three hundred thousand times, while applying its teachings, can heal the ailments of your gaze. Your life's fortune may naturally change as your heart becomes pure, making your mind and eyes clearer.
