Health Insights from Facial Features: Eyes

Physical health issues often show up in a person's facial features. By regularly observing the face, you can get a rough sense of your physical condition, allowing for timely prevention and early treatment. This article explains how different illnesses may manifest on the face, starting with the eyes.

In physiognomy, the eyes are the most important feature. By observing a person's eyes, one can glean their character, intelligence, moral integrity, decisiveness, physical vitality, and luck. Healthy, favorable eyes show a clear contrast between the whites and the iris (a dark iris and bright whites) and appear bright and lively, as if reflecting light. The shape of the eyes is secondary. As long as the eyes are clear and lively, it suggests the person is decisive, intelligent, energetic, and healthy. However, if the eyes show the following signs, there may be health issues that warrant attention.

1. Discoloration of the Whites of the Eyes

In traditional Chinese medicine, the eyes are connected to the liver. If the whites of the eyes turn yellow, it may indicate liver disease—such as hepatitis—and prompt medical care is advised. If the whites take on a peacock-blue tint or the eyelids look pale, it usually points to anemia; increasing blood-building foods can help prevent discomfort. Allergic reactions can also darken the whites, dull their luster, and reduce contrast. Green spots on the whites may suggest intestinal obstruction; tiny red specks often result from dilated capillaries and are common in diabetics; and very pale whites may indicate heart disease or circulatory problems.

2. Swollen Eyes

This may point to kidney issues—such as adrenal imbalances or chronic nephritis—and warrants prompt medical attention. It’s advisable to get more sleep, avoid overwork, favor warm foods like stews, and eat vegetables such as carrots and white radishes. Drinking dandelion tea may also help. Additionally, reduce salt intake and limit coffee.

3. Unexplained Dark Circles

Setting aside causes like staying up late or lack of sleep, dark circles that appear with other unusual symptoms may be a sign of illness. Conditions such as liver cirrhosis, nephritis, kidney failure, respiratory failure, blood disorders, or endocrine disorders can all lead to dark circles. If this occurs, seek a medical evaluation as soon as possible.

4. Protruding Eyes

Aside from congenital factors or protrusion associated with longstanding myopia and wearing glasses, protruding eyes can indicate thyroid problems. Conditions such as carotid–cavernous fistula, leukemia, or metastatic malignant lymphoma can also cause protrusion, so see a doctor promptly for diagnosis.

5. Moles on the Eyes

Individuals with moles on the upper eyelids may face obstacles in their career and financial fortune, and may be prone to inner turmoil and illness. Those with moles on the lower eyelids may have a weaker constitution and be more likely to encounter accidents.

6. Red or Dark Red Under-Eye Area

This is often seen in pregnant women and may indicate complications during childbirth, such as the need for a cesarean section. If the eyes are protruding, this condition may be more pronounced.

7. Prominent Blue Veins in the Tear Duct Area

Individuals with this facial feature may have poor marital luck, which could lead to misfortune, and it may also indicate weak kidney function, making them more susceptible to kidney disease.

Modern life moves fast, and under immense pressure to succeed and earn more, people often neglect their health. In pursuing their goals, many overwork and stay up late, wearing down their bodies. Without good health, no amount of money brings enjoyment. So while working hard, make your well-being a priority and strive to live each day in good health.
