Four Facial Features Women Should Avoid

In traditional Chinese culture, from antiquity to the present, the ideal woman is described as virtuous, gentle, gracious, dignified, and well-cultured. Women who behave in a frivolous, seductive, rude, or impulsive manner are generally frowned upon. From the perspective of physiognomy, which traits should women avoid? Let's take a look:
1. Not Seductive
"Not seductive" means an ideal woman should not adopt alluring poses or mannerisms. Historical figures such as Daji and Yang Guifei are said to have beguiled rulers with their beauty—often summed up as a "calamity caused by beauty."
2. Not Frivolous
"Not frivolous" means one’s conduct should not be shallow or flighty. Men like Ximen Qing, known for their frivolity, often approach women improperly. If such behavior is unacceptable in men, it is even less becoming in women. Ancient texts state: "Smiling before speaking; eyes darting about; seeming dazed as if drunk; and lips moving excessively—these are all signs of frivolity."
From a physiognomic perspective, a woman whose lips are often slightly parted—think of Marilyn Monroe—whose eyes wander aimlessly, whose gaze appears intoxicated or unfocused, and who giggles before speaking is displaying frivolity and is certainly not ladylike.
3. Not Masculine
"Not masculine" means a good woman should not display masculine physical features—such as a visible Adam's apple, facial hair, a deep voice—or masculine mannerisms. Ancient texts note: "Men should not exhibit feminine traits, and women should not exhibit masculine traits." Because discussions of fate emphasize yin and yang—with men aligned with yang and women with yin—if a woman, who should embody yin, displays yang characteristics, it is seen as a reversal of yin and yang and is considered inauspicious.
4. Not Impulsive
"Impulsive" here means "impatient or irritable." Impulsive people tend to have forceful personalities; while such traits are undesirable in men, they are viewed as even more inappropriate for women, who are expected to embody gentleness. Irritability clouds judgment, making it hard to tell right from wrong. Those who act in haste often fail, as few successes are achieved in a state of impatience.
