Assessing Liver and Gallbladder Health through Facial Features

"The liver governs planning, while the gallbladder governs decision-making" suggests that these two organs work together to guide strategy and resolve. When their functions are impaired, hesitation and indecision may follow. The liver and gallbladder are interconnected; discernment and the will to act are said to arise from the gallbladder. As the saying goes, "The clearer the gallbladder, the clearer the mind." If the gallbladder is clouded, the mind naturally becomes confused and decisions are hard to make; when the gallbladder is clear, the mind is clear as well, and choosing becomes easier.

Reflex Areas of the Liver on the Face:

The reflex areas are located midway between the eyebrows and above the temples, as well as on the lower third of the forehead and the middle of the nose (its highest point). If these areas look dark or show spots—especially in younger people or affluent, high-ranking individuals—it may suggest fatty liver.

  • If there is acne (raised bumps) in these areas, it indicates strong liver fire.
  • Spots at the temples suggest weakened liver function. Spots on the high point of the nose may also point to strong liver fire, emotional volatility, or menopause.
  • If both areas show obvious spots, the complexion is dull and sallow, and the person appears thin, it suggests liver disease (hepatitis or cirrhosis).
  • A mole between the eyebrows, together with yellowing of the eyes and a markedly yellow complexion, suggests hepatitis B. A bluish line running from the bridge of the nose to the tip may indicate a tumor or cancer.

Reflex Areas of the Gallbladder on the Face:

The gallbladder reflex area lies on the outer side of the nose's high point. Red veins or acne here, or waking with a bitter taste in the mouth, indicate mild gallbladder inflammation; the presence of spots may suggest cholecystitis.

Vertical lines in this area, or lines that appear when you smile, indicate a gallbladder issue. Moles or spots here point to a congenital weakness of gallbladder function. Place your right hand beneath your right rib (over the gallbladder) and tap the back of that hand with your clenched left fist: pain suggests cholecystitis, and sharp pain may indicate gallstones. People with gallbladder problems may be overweight. A pair of distinct spots or moles beneath the eyes points to gallstones, and dark circles under the eyes also indicate poor gallbladder health.

Also, pimples on the left cheek may suggest the liver is not functioning smoothly and that heat toxicity is present. Keep a regular schedule, maintain a positive mood, and avoid hot, stuffy environments.

Small pimples around the temples indicate a diet too high in processed foods, leading to gallbladder congestion; timely detoxification is recommended.

When people struggle to make decisions, they often scratch their heads—this is thought to engage the gallbladder meridian and help with decision-making. Why? The areas people tend to scratch follow the course of the gallbladder meridian, and that stimulation can assist with making choices. Many young people develop white hairs above the ears due to insufficient blood and energy in the gallbladder meridian, with late nights and lack of timely rest being major contributors.

The liver and gallbladder are closely tied to planning and decision-making. Many factors can leave people timid and doubtful, reducing initiative, so it's important to support liver and gallbladder function. The most direct approach is to set things aside and get a good night's sleep. As the saying goes, "Better to skip a meal than to skip sleep." For faster results, focus on the gallbladder meridian: from a yin-yang perspective, it is a yang meridian and tends to respond quickly.
