What Factors Influence Fortune-Telling Results?
For most people, the point of fortune-telling is to attract good luck, avoid misfortune, and seek blessings while steering clear of calamity. In practice, the results serve as a reference for understanding one’s circumstances and deciding when to advance or hold back.
"Progress" refers to striving for advancement, scaling up, and pursuing growth. Using "wealth" and "official position" as examples: for "wealth," it suggests increasing investment or expanding operations to achieve greater development, raise social standing, broaden influence, and secure larger returns; for "official position," it implies actively pursuing promotions and enhancing one’s reputation. All of these fall under progress.
"Retreat," on the other hand, means maintaining the status quo, downsizing, or even pausing business operations. Again using "wealth" and "official position" as examples: for "wealth," it advises maintaining current operations and managing finances prudently, avoiding new investments or expansions; for "official position," it calls for a moderate approach—keeping a low profile, guarding against scheming individuals, and focusing on one’s duties for modest gains. All of these fall under retreat.
In general, even achieving basic accuracy in fortune-telling is challenging. Some discrepancy between reality and the reading is normal and should not be used to dismiss the validity of fortune-telling. Influencing factors include the inherent complexity of destiny and external conditions.
The inherent complexity of destiny is reflected in the intricate, multifaceted relationships among the Eight Characters (Ba Zi), the major luck cycles, and annual luck, including their clashes and interactions. The severity of these clashes can be hard to judge, and their expressions vary. For example, loss of wealth may show up as losing property, being deceived, failed investments, injury, or accidents—but it can also take positive forms, such as purchasing a home or a car.
External factors are just as complex. In ancient thought, three main influences shape destiny: the grave (Yin-house feng shui), the residence (Yang-house feng shui), and fate itself. Destiny can be affected by graves and residences. For instance, an ancestral grave with unfavorable feng shui may harm descendants, even if the deceased did not have a doomed fate; the same applies to residences.
Additionally, the results of fortune-telling can be influenced by each person’s circumstances, such as family situation, geographic location, and how well a name aligns with destiny. People born at the same time may share similar destinies, yet their actual situations can differ greatly, even as their developmental paths align closely.
There is an ancient saying: "A gentleman inquires about misfortune, not fortune; about calamity, not blessings." Fortune-telling should not dwell on minor discrepancies, but rather guide people in recognizing when to advance and when to retreat.
