The Best Time for Love: Insights from the Venus-Mars Connection

In a person's natal chart, a harmonious aspect between Venus and Mars often indicates ongoing romantic opportunities throughout life. More specifically, if one person's Venus forms a favorable aspect with another person's Mars, the quality of love between them tends to be especially strong. But when is the best time for this to happen? That brings us to transits and progressions. Progressions involve more complex calculations and describe longer-term romantic themes, while transits are simpler and have immediate effects. Let's start with transits.

Many astrologers time an aspect’s influence by the exact contact between two planets. At the exact contact, the sign-based and elemental resonance is at its strongest. In practice, when transiting Venus forms a conjunction, opposition, trine, or sextile to your natal Mars (the two planets are in signs that create these aspects), or when transiting Mars forms a conjunction, opposition, trine, or sextile to your natal Venus, it’s prime time for romance or for interacting with the opposite sex.

Based on the relationship between Venus and Mars, each person experiences three distinct windows and qualities of love:

• When transiting Venus and Mars are not in harmonious aspect to your natal Venus and Mars: This period is relatively low-key; desire is muted, and the opposite sex may be less receptive to you.
• When only one planet forms a harmonious aspect to your natal Venus or Mars (whether Venus or Mars): This is a suitable time for intimacy or connecting with the opposite sex. Transiting Venus to natal Mars: someone may approach you, and you can set the pace. Transiting Mars to natal Venus: the other person may take the lead.
• When both transiting Venus and Mars form harmonious aspects to your natal Venus and Mars: This is the best time for romance or interacting with the opposite sex, as both channels are open.

Note: We are discussing aspects between Venus and Mars—not Venus to Venus or Mars to Mars (though those can have secondary effects). Among aspects, conjunctions and oppositions are the strongest and most harmonious, followed by trines and sextiles. Squares and quincunxes can also bring strong sexual attraction or stimulation, but they often amplify desire and then deteriorate over time. Twelfth-harmonic aspects are usually dull or mediocre.

When transiting Venus and Mars simultaneously form harmonious aspects to your natal Venus and Mars, it’s an ideal time to meet the opposite sex. If we add supportive transits, consider the transiting Moon to your natal Sun (for men) and the transiting Sun to your natal Moon (for women), which can further open relationship channels.

After establishing a solid emotional foundation, choosing a partner is the next step. There should be similarly favorable interactions between your Venus and Mars and your partner’s. The 1/2/3 rules above also apply to synastry. You’ll need an ephemeris or astrology software to determine planetary positions; once you understand this, timing becomes much easier.

So, where are the best locations for romance? The same rules apply to countries, provinces, and cities or counties. First, the national chart matters; check the positions of Venus and Mars and how they interact with your natal Venus and Mars. Then look at the province, and finally the city or county. After these three steps, the more favorable the Venus–Mars aspects, the better the location will be for romance.
