Characteristics of the Planets

Most people know there are twelve zodiac signs. We typically determine someone’s zodiac sign by the Sun’s position at birth. However, to understand a person’s personality, you shouldn’t look only at the Sun sign—you should also consider all the other planets, as each one governs certain traits:

• Sun: The source of light for the entire system, it has the strongest influence on the core personality; every sign is affected by it.
• Moon: Rules a person’s emotions, instincts, and moods.
• Venus: Governs love, affection, and attraction (it’s especially helpful for partners to know each other’s Venus placements and aspects).
• Mercury: Primarily influences thought patterns, learning, and communication.
• Mars: Governs willpower, drive, and how a person asserts themselves.
• Jupiter: Relates to growth and opportunity (“luck”) and one’s spiritual life.
• Saturn: Describes discipline, limits, delays, and the lessons learned through hardship (defense, restraint, endurance, etc.).
• Uranus: Influences breakthroughs, sudden changes, and the nervous system.
• Neptune: Influences imagination, ideals, dreams, and sensitivity.
• Pluto: Affects deep transformation, power, and the psyche.
• Ascendant: Influences a person’s life path and the way they meet the world.

Characteristics of the Zodiac Signs

Next, let’s discuss the basic characteristics of the twelve signs, starting with the four elements and three modalities. The four elements are Fire, Air, Water, and Earth; the three modalities are Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable. Their distribution is as follows:

Cardinal signs tend to change their environment, create new situations, and influence what’s around them. Fixed signs are less likely to be swayed by change. The basic characteristics of the four elements are: Fire signs are passionate; Water signs are emotional; Air signs are intellectual; Earth signs are practical and sensory. If most of your planets (Sun, Moon, Venus, Mercury, etc.) are in Cardinal signs, you’re inclined to initiate change; similarly, if your planets are predominantly in Water signs, you’re emotionally rich. This explains why a Virgo might be very active if other planets are in dynamic signs like Aries or Sagittarius—their behavior would then show Fire-sign traits.
