In astrology, understanding someone’s chart involves more than just the Sun sign. At minimum, consider three signs: the rising sign (Ascendant), Sun sign, and Moon sign. In fact, many astrologers regard the rising sign as even more influential than the Sun sign.

1. Rising Sign

The rising sign is the zodiac sign that was on the eastern horizon at the exact time of birth. It shapes a person’s appearance, baseline temperament, and the first impression they make on others.

2. Sun Sign

While the Sun sign is widely discussed, its core meaning is often overlooked. The Sun is the only self-luminous body in the solar system; even the Moon shines by reflecting its light. In astrology, the Sun symbolizes all yang/masculine energy and outward identity—roles like father, husband, and authority figures. In Western psychology, it corresponds to spirit, will, and consciousness. The Sun also relates to one’s public image and reputation.

3. Moon Sign

If the Sun describes the outer self, the Moon speaks for the inner world. In astrology, the Moon carries meanings similar to the Yin star in Zi Wei Dou Shu.
