Description of the Card
The figure of Death wears a red feathered headdress, carries a banner, and rides a white warhorse, looking down at those below. In his hand, he lifts a black flag bearing the Rosicrucian emblem. Some say this symbol represents rebirth after death; others link it to Mars, signifying indomitable life force. Beneath the horse lie a king, a clergyman, a woman, and a child—four different attitudes toward death. The king resists and is ultimately trampled; the clergyman lays down his token, honoring death and praying for guidance to heaven; the woman kneels in terror and faints at the thought of dying; only the innocent child looks on with curious wonder. Four people, four mindsets—resistance, reverence, panic, and innocence—yet they all point to the same truth: regardless of wealth or poverty, age or gender, death is an inevitable part of nature. It cannot be escaped, nor should it be feared as an absolute end.
In the distance flows a river—one of Eden’s four rivers—with a boat nearby. At Death’s feet, an arrow points to a cave-like opening, possibly the entrance to the underworld described in Dante’s “Divine Comedy.” Mortals cannot escape death, but the end of one life heralds the beginning of another. On the right, a path runs between two tall towers toward an eternal sunrise and the mystery of Jerusalem, indicating that death is not the end of all things. Death’s white horse represents purity—washing away the past and opening to a fresh start. The message is to release what has been and welcome what is coming.
When we think of “death,” we often focus only on physical death—accidents or terminal illness. In Tarot, such calamities are more commonly shown by the Tower; Death points to other kinds of endings. These endings happen every day, every hour, every moment (though paired with cards like the Tower or Ten of Swords, it can suggest literal death). Leaving a job, finishing a thesis, or turning in for the night are all endings. From contracts concluding and marriages dissolving to simply waking up to a new day, we constantly move through endings. Drawing the Death card is therefore not automatically ominous.
Yet people often fear change. That fear makes the end of familiar patterns feel frightening. The true lesson of Death is how to meet change. Upright, it suggests you have the capacity to face what’s coming. The reader need only remind you that change is imminent and to prepare. And because Death is a Major Arcana card, this shift is ultimately unavoidable—even if you initiated it yourself (for example, by resigning).
Upright Meaning
1. Basic Meaning
Keywords: Failure, a run of bad luck, dead ends, despair, loss, feeling trapped, efforts that don’t pay off, unspoken pain.
Death marks the closing of the old to make room for the new. It signals a transitional phase of change. A chapter is ending, and accepting that truth allows the process to unfold naturally. Hold to the belief that “life brings something better than what it takes away.” On some level, you may already be longing for change; Death indicates it’s on the way. Don’t resist—lean into it.
2. Love and Relationships
Keywords: Growing distance, breakup, heartbreak, separation, divorce, loss of affection.
You’ve ended a long-term relationship. At first, the pain of leaving familiar habits is overwhelming, but it becomes a valuable moment for reflection. Gradually, you realize the relationship wasn’t right for you. You can now articulate the qualities you truly seek in a partner, guiding you toward a happier future.
3. Work and Studies
Keywords: Declining performance, stalled projects, feeling powerless, stagnation, being fired, poor grades, academic standstill, hopelessness about studies.
You’ve lost your job unexpectedly, and the sudden loss of income sparks panic. With time, you accept reality, perhaps returning to school to upskill and seeking new opportunities—ultimately landing on a career path that fits you better.
4. Interpersonal Relationships and Wealth
Keywords: Overindulgence, impulsive shopping, reckless spending, friendships deteriorating, rifts in relationships, depression, losing friends or drifting apart.
Your business is declining and your investments are falling. Without a steady income, you can’t cover loans or credit cards and may even face foreclosure. This is a major financial crisis—but it will pass. You’ll learn a great deal from it and have the chance to rebuild.
5. Health and Lifestyle
Keywords: Accidents, neglecting personal health.
Your health is flashing warning signs, possibly requiring surgery. These are your body’s signals to start taking better care of yourself.
6. Other
Emotional numbness, world-weariness, tough dilemmas, life feeling unreal, suffering in silence.

Reversed Meaning
This also points to the breakdown of old patterns, but your attitude and the timing differ. In reverse, resistance and delay are common—you may try to postpone change and cling to the status quo even when recovery is clearly impossible. The result is simply a longer road and a longer period of suffering.
1. Basic Meaning
Keywords: Changing plans, updating your image, resurgence, coming up from a low point, transformation, courage to explore, renewed vitality.
The reversed Death card can show an intense fear of any form of ending. Even small changes may feel like threats to your very existence, leading you to resist at all costs because you won’t face what must end. This fear can trap you in old habits, creating a monotonous, repetitive life that hides the despair you feel about impending change.
When you resist change, you pour your energy into standing still—often draining others around you to keep things as they are. Right now, an ending is necessary; yet your fear keeps you stuck in anguish, frustration, or exhaustion, because most of your energy goes into resisting the shift.
2. Love and Relationships
Keywords: Winning hearts, improved dynamics, rekindled romance, new love emerging.
You’ve grown used to your current relationship dynamic and refuse to change it—even if it feels dull—because it feels safe.
3. Work and Studies
Keywords: Performance rebound, turning points, overcoming obstacles, colleagues moving on, academic progress, favorable exam results, starting new study plans.
You’re dissatisfied with your job, but the steady paycheck makes you reluctant to leave. You’ll try every means to hold your position.
4. Interpersonal Relationships and Wealth
Keywords: Financial recovery, reconciling with friends, letting go of old grievances, rekindling friendships, new connections forming.
Your finances have faced a severe crisis that could wipe you out. Because you haven’t learned from past mistakes, you tend to blame external factors, making it hard to spot opportunities for a turnaround.
5. Health and Lifestyle
Keywords: Moderate exercise supports health, overcoming illness through willpower.
Fear of future changes has left you highly anxious, increasing your vulnerability to mental health challenges.
6. Other
Uplifted mood, courage to explore.
