Palmistry Guide: Fingernails

Nails form in the skin and are made up of countless tiny, hair-like fibers. They can reflect a person's health, temperament, and personality. Nails can be classified by their shape, length, softness or hardness, and thickness. Generally, soft, thin nails tend to be long and narrow, while thick, hard nails are short and wide. Nail length can be gauged by comparing the nail surface to the first segment of the finger (from the fingertip to the first knuckle), with about half being the norm; longer than that is considered long, and shorter is considered short. Nail width can be compared to the width across the back of the finger joint, with about four-fifths being standard; wider nails are considered broad, while narrower ones are considered narrow.
- Long nails: Often indicate good circulation, abundant energy, a stable personality, an interest in the arts, patience, and a vivid imagination.
- Short nails: Often suggest lower vitality. On the hands of manual laborers, this may point to nervous weakness and circulation issues in the lower limbs. On the hands of knowledge workers, it may indicate irritability, impatience, a tendency to argue or fight, and a penchant for sarcasm, but it also suggests quick reflexes and decisiveness.
- Overly long nails: Very long, narrow nails can indicate low resistance and may be associated with skeletal or dental issues.
- Broad nails: Suggest well-functioning physiology and strong immunity. If the nails are rounded, it suggests honesty, straightforwardness, fairness, an open mind, and patience.
- Narrow nails: Suggest limited tolerance, low physical strength, jealousy, a volatile temperament, and a tendency to hold grudges.
- Thick nails: Indicate robust health and longevity, characterized by boldness. Thick, strong nails suggest high self-esteem and a strong sense of self; if the nail surface is rounded and prominent, it indicates a forceful personality and a tendency toward impatience.
- Thin nails: Suggest a person who is often physically weak and may have a shorter lifespan, characterized by timidity. If the nails are thin and brittle, it may indicate a calcium deficiency, often associated with feelings of depression, nervous tension, and a stubborn personality. Thin, soft nails also suggest a lack of calcium and a tendency toward nervous weakness.
