There is an old saying in China: "A fortunate person is favored by heaven, and a virtuous person has the support of heaven." Here, "heaven's favor" symbolizes divine assistance and blessings. The "Tao Te Ching" also mentions that the way of heaven is impartial, always favoring the good. Heaven blesses the virtuous; it consistently looks after and aids those who are fortunate and kind-hearted.

Many people pray to gods and buddhas, hoping for heavenly or spiritual help. However, in ancient Chinese thought, whether from Confucianism, Buddhism, or Taoism, it is believed that one cannot seek blessings and assistance from heaven externally. Instead, self-cultivation through discipline, practice, and moral development is essential to becoming a fortunate and virtuous person, and then heaven's assistance will naturally follow. Fortunate and virtuous individuals aren't necessarily great figures or saints; many exist in everyday life—those who do good deeds, strive for self-improvement, and possess a generous spirit are the ones heaven chooses to assist.

Fortunate people are those who do good deeds

In modern times, people often emphasize kindness, while ancient Chinese values focused on doing good and being virtuous. Kindness reflects a pure heart and a powerful force of goodness, while doing good and acting virtuously means expressing this force by helping others and supporting just causes, thereby expanding this force and increasing one's blessings. Fortunate individuals are not only kind but also actively engage in good deeds. They help those in need, recognize others' strengths, assist those facing difficulties, and remember the kindness they've received. By believing in their own fortune and sincerely striving to be virtuous, starting from a positive mindset and small good deeds, and not dismissing minor acts of kindness, heaven will undoubtedly treat and assist them well.

Fortunate people are self-reliant

Fortunate and virtuous individuals must be self-reliant. Heaven does not aid those who are self-destructive or lack ambition. The "I Ching" suggests that those who rely on themselves will be favored by heaven and spared from misfortune. "Self" refers to the individual, also known as the microcosm; "heaven" signifies the divine, or the macrocosm. When a person's microcosm aligns with the macrocosm of heaven, it creates a state of harmony between man and heaven. Those who help themselves will also receive help from heaven. Self-reliance is a prerequisite for divine assistance. "Self" is the internal factor, the smaller environment, while "heaven" is the external factor, the larger environment. When both environments support an individual, it becomes natural for wishes to come true and for good fortune to abound. Fortunate and virtuous individuals must continually strive for self-improvement and renew their virtues. Through their own efforts, step by step, they cultivate virtue and expand their endeavors, achieving success as though assisted by divine forces.

Fortunate people are magnanimous

Magnanimous individuals possess broad vision, great ambition, a generous spirit, and a grand perspective. Being magnanimous means rising above and not getting caught up in various emotional struggles or concerns about gains and losses. They are open-minded, not petty. Magnanimous people are dignified yet gentle, shining without ostentation, embodying a mature demeanor. They are solemn and warm, commanding respect without being harsh. They have unique personalities and shining qualities, yet when interacting with others, they never act arrogantly, allowing others to feel their brilliance without being overwhelming. In facing life, they maintain an open mind, tackle challenges head-on, let go of burdens, advance as needed, retreat wisely, and remain steady and calm, resilient and steadfast, facing challenges with composure.

Postscript: Throughout our lives, we seek great fortune and heavenly assistance. However, the focus should be on ourselves, on self-cultivation and practice, rather than on others or external factors. In summary, it can be said: If you are a fortunate person, heaven will favor you; if you are a virtuous person, heaven will assist you.
