What Does "Horse Eye" Mean in Physiognomy?

Among facial features, the eyes are considered the most important. By observing a person’s eyes, people believed they could discern virtue or malice, wisdom or folly, nobility or baseness of character, decisiveness, physical vigor, and even luck. Ideal eyes are said to have clear whites and dark pupils with a lively, spirited gaze. People with such eyes are usually decisive, intelligent, energetic, and healthy. I. Characteristics of Horse Eyes

According to the "Ma Yi Shen Xiang": “Broad, triangular, protruding eyes, often clouded with sorrow and tears. A thin face with taut skin is truly pitiable; in their busyness, they may harm spouse and children.” In other words, horse eyes are characterized by large, wide, slightly triangular eyes that bulge outward, with loose eyelids and slightly raised outer corners. The gaze appears murky and unfocused, as if the vision were confused, and the eyes seem perpetually tearful, with crow’s-feet that are irregular and point downward.

II. Fate Characteristics of Individuals with Horse Eyes

A verse says: “With horse eyes and a dazed look, their color is dim; stubborn by nature, they are destined to sink. Throughout life, they toil and struggle, often facing hardships far and wide.” Another adds: “Horse eyes with wide lids signify a life of labor; tears seem ready to fall, burdened with sorrow. They are straightforward and not deceitful, yet they run tirelessly without lofty ambitions.” These suggest that individuals with horse eyes tend to be stubborn, prone to twisting facts, gossiping, and speaking bluntly, which easily offends others. Many are said to come from poor backgrounds, laboring daily just to make a living, leaving them few smiles and a constant weight of worry. If they also have thin faces with taut skin, their fate is considered even harsher: they may bring misfortune to their spouses and children and spend their lives in relentless struggle, making family happiness difficult to achieve.
