What Does “Bear Eyes” Mean in Physiognomy?

In physiognomy, there’s a saying: “Of the ten parts of the face, seven are in the eyes,” meaning the eyes are considered the most important facial feature. It is believed that a person’s spirit, presence, courage, and even prosperity can be read from the eyes. In traditional physiognomy, eye shapes were classified—dragon eyes, turtle eyes, lion eyes, sparrow eyes—and used to assess character and fate. I. Characteristics of Bear Eyes

Bear eyes are large and round, with a lot of white showing and small pupils, somewhat resembling a pig’s eyes. The gaze appears dull and lifeless, with prominent under-eye bags and deep-set sockets, giving a fierce and inauspicious impression.

II. Personality and Fate of People with Bear Eyes

A poem states: “Bear eyes round like a pig’s, foolishly showing strength and ferocity; sitting still or moving for long, heavy breathing follows—can the Aoshis still prevail?” In other words, people with bear eyes are said to have round, pig-like eyes and, after sitting or exerting themselves for a long time, tend to breathe heavily and rapidly. Bear eyes are considered a sign of ill fortune. Those with this feature are often described as dull-witted, rough and violent, narrow-minded, brave without strategy, suspicious, greedy, and prone to romantic entanglements. They like to rely on brute strength to show off and fight, which brings only momentary satisfaction; in the end, they are subdued and receive the punishment they deserve.
