In physiognomy, the three sections of the face aren’t evaluated by geometry or measured angles; they’re viewed as reflections of a person’s fate.
Among the three, a longer middle section is considered most favorable, while a longer upper section is least desirable. A longer upper and middle section with a shorter lower section can suggest a certain level of career success, whereas a shorter upper section combined with longer middle and lower sections often points to a life of hard work. If the middle section is the shortest while both the upper and lower sections are long, it is said to indicate a short lifespan or premature death.
The three sections are thought to reflect not only appearance and stages of life, but also how one relates to others. Why is the middle section considered especially important?
The upper section is associated with one’s early years and family background—traditionally called “birth.” While birth sets the stage, it doesn’t guarantee lifelong success. Hence the idea that heroes aren’t defined by their origins: whether someone grew up in comfort or hardship, the true starting point in life lies elsewhere. Birth is only a base of experience. If the upper section is long but the middle and lower sections are short, it suggests a tendency toward dependency and entitlement.
The middle section represents the prime of life—roughly ages thirty to fifty—highlighting one’s capacity to build and achieve. This period reflects personal accomplishments; the stronger the achievements, the better for one’s career. For example, an heir who starts a company without worry may look similar to a self-made entrepreneur, but the substance of their efforts is fundamentally different.
The lower section corresponds to later life and the blessings of one’s descendants. If one must keep striving hard at this stage, it suggests a difficult life. The quality of the lower section is judged more by shape than by size; however, if it is disproportionately large compared with the upper and middle sections, it implies mediocrity or laziness.
The importance of the middle section is clear. Put simply, when you look back on life, your ability to name a few accomplishments you’re proud of is tied to the strength of the middle section. Ancient scholars emphasized this with the saying “a wild goose leaves a call; a person leaves a name,” underscoring that genuine pride isn’t just about showing off material comforts.
