Facial Features of the Talented Yet Unrecognized

The Five Arts teach: "Yin alone cannot give birth, and Yang alone cannot flourish." For heaven and earth to be in balance and for all things to revive, Yin and Yang must be in harmony. According to Feng Shui, when a home’s energy is dim and overrun with creeping vines, residents tend to become withdrawn and gloomy. Conversely, if the energy is overly Yang and the windows face south, it may be associated with blood-related issues, restlessness, and difficulty conceiving.

In terms of BaZi, regardless of the Day Master’s Five Elements, those born in the month of Chou must first regulate the seasonal climate, whatever the overall pattern. For example, if a BaZi chart shows cold Metal and cold Water with no Fire, the person may lead a solitary life with little prospect of wealth or renown. Similarly, physiognomy also discusses the ideas of lonely Yin and solitary Yang.

The sages have said that there are eleven “cold” patterns in physiognomy. Falling into any of these may allow one’s writings to endure, yet make tangible achievement difficult. This may sound severe—especially in times when scholarship was highly valued—but today it can be read as reflecting the ups and downs of one’s career. This perspective also resembles the way BaZi adjusts useful elements. Below are the eleven cold patterns, briefly outlined.

1. A Chicken in the Rain Signifies Cold Form

A chicken caught in the rain huddles with its head pulled in, looking thin and chilled. In human features, this often appears as raised shoulders and a retracted neck, hinting at a solitary life.

2. A Mouse Eating Sloppily Signifies Cold Speech

A mouse scatters crumbs everywhere as it eats. In people, this shows up as dropping food, misplacing chopsticks or utensils, or spilling bowls and cups. Such individuals often lack great prospects and may fail to grasp the weight of their actions.

3. Tearless Yet Teary Eyes Signify Cold Spirit

It is often observed that women who are divorced or living alone may appear teary-eyed without having cried, indicating a cold spirit that can strain relationships.

4. Worried for No Reason Signifies Cold Qi

In the workplace, some men constantly frown and sigh and rarely smile. They create worries out of nothing, leading to a narrow, fretful disposition.

5. A Broken Voice Signifies Cold Sound

A broken voice cannot carry a tune, resulting in hoarseness or a weak tone. Women with hoarse voices are said to have to rely on themselves.

6. Thick, Coarse Brows Signify Cold Eyebrows

Thick eyebrows lacking clear definition are considered cold. While “coarse” can mean cracked skin, here it describes eyebrows that are thick and uneven, resembling a rugged ridgeline. Such individuals tend to be stubborn and difficult to reason with.

7. Shaking Head and Feet Signifies Cold Body

It is said that men who tremble tend to be poor, while women who tremble tend to be of low status. These involuntary movements can have medical explanations; in traditional Chinese medicine, they are linked to a deficiency of kidney energy and an inability to concentrate. Those who build from nothing may experience both sharp rises and steep falls.

8. Dusty, Oily Complexion Signifies Cold Color

It is often noted that people working in entertainment venues show a different complexion. During periods of poor fortune, one may appear listless. The reason lies in the energy emanating from within and reflected on the face; it is not merely a matter of hygiene. An oily complexion is often linked with rapid financial loss.

9. Hesitant Speech Signifies Cold Heart

In action, one either advances firmly or dithers indecisively. A timid heart leads to shallow insight.

10. Constant Anxiety and Distraction Signify Cold Courage

Timidity breeds panic, undermining careful execution. A scattered mind invents needless worries and becomes tangled in them. Insufficient courage results in a lack of ambition.

11. Success Turning to Failure, Ingratitude and Resentment Signify Cold Intent

It is said that those who succeed may appear desolate, rising and falling in equal measure. As for ingratitude and resentment, such behavior is not that of a gentleman. Heaven’s way is evident; there is no need to argue. In summary: "Thin is thin, and cold is cold; those who are both cold and thin are not ordinary." Lean individuals with spirit will ultimately thrive, while those who are cold—though they may shine for a time—remain lonely. Many lean people have cold traits, but not all lean people are cold. Lean individuals with spirit will eventually succeed; if they have bright eyes and defined cheekbones, they will surely flourish in middle age regardless of present circumstances. Those with cold traits, however, even if they meet other criteria for success, will struggle to sustain it.
