"Look at your face before going out" suggests that each day, before leaving home or setting off on a significant journey, one should take a moment to observe their facial features in the mirror. This practice helps assess whether one's aura is positive and harmonious or gloomy and foreboding. If it is positive, you can proceed confidently; if negative, it may be wise to reconsider plans or exercise extra caution while outside.
"Reflect on your heart before sleeping" encourages nightly reflection: What actions were taken today? What was done well? What was done poorly? It's important not to become arrogant or complacent about achievements and to promptly acknowledge and correct any mistakes. This aligns with Confucian self-cultivation teachings. As Zengzi stated, "I examine myself three times a day," highlighting the importance of regular reflection and self-assessment.
In ancient times, face-reading was not just a common practice among the general public but was also prevalent among Taoists and Buddhists. Medical professionals used it as a crucial part of diagnostic processes, and many scholars and officials were skilled in face-reading. The late Qing Dynasty statesman Zeng Guofan was particularly noted for his expertise in this area.
Whether in Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, or medicine, there is a shared belief in the connection between heaven and humanity, stressing the fundamental role of inner cultivation in determining one's fate. Thus, this saying serves as both guidance for face-reading practitioners and a means of self-protection.
