Ancient Physiognomy: Eyebrow Analysis
1. Vertical
Vertical eyebrows grow upward rather than lying flat against the skin. In physiognomy, this is said to indicate weak reasoning, impulsiveness, and a tendency to solve problems with force, which can invite trouble and legal issues throughout life. People with this brow type are also described as rough in temperament, lacking tenderness, and not especially considerate partners; this interpretation applies to women as well.
2. Reversed
Reversed eyebrows grow in the opposite direction at the inner ends, pointing toward the center of the forehead. In physiognomy, this suggests someone is not good at handling relationships. If only the left eyebrow is reversed, it points to relationship difficulties before age thirty and an inability to care for a deceased father; if the right eyebrow is reversed, similar issues occur after thirty and an inability to care for a deceased mother. If both eyebrows are reversed, it suggests lifelong challenges with relationships and an inability to care for either parent upon their passing.
3. Broken
Broken eyebrows are eyebrows that are not continuous; this may be congenital or the result of an accident. In physiognomy, broken eyebrows indicate that siblings may experience early separation or loss, and they also suggest a higher risk of hand injuries or fractures. If the break is due to an accident, men typically experience a break in the left eyebrow at about ages one, ten, or nineteen; a break in the right eyebrow usually occurs around ages seven, sixteen, or twenty-five. For women, the ages are reversed.
4. Thick
It is common for men to have thicker eyebrows and women to have thinner ones. Thick eyebrows are said to reflect a focus on major matters, while thin eyebrows point to attention to details. However, some men have thin eyebrows and some women have thick ones. In physiognomy, such men are considered detail-oriented, attentive to daily minutiae, and even inclined toward household management and decoration; conversely, women with thick eyebrows may prioritize social life over their husbands. If a man's eyebrows are excessively thick or coarse in shape, this may suggest lewdness, fear of one’s wife, a likelihood of imprisonment at least once, and a tendency to marry an older partner. If a woman's eyebrows are overly thick, it may indicate a masculine demeanor, a proactive approach, leadership qualities, and a tendency to marry a younger partner. Overly thick eyebrows can also suggest carelessness.
5. High/Low
In Eastern cultures, the distance between the eyebrows and the eyes is generally wider, while in Western cultures it tends to be narrower. In physiognomy, the area between the eyebrows and eyes is where family ties are read. A wider gap in Eastern individuals is taken to indicate a stronger emphasis on family values, while a narrower gap in Western individuals suggests weaker family ties. High eyebrows also indicate sensitivity to the mysterious, while low eyebrows suggest a practical, realistic nature. Of course, there are Westerners with high eyebrows and Easterners with low eyebrows, and the interpretations are the same. If a person’s eyebrows are particularly high, it suggests early achievements; conversely, if the eyebrows are very low and press down over the eyes—called “ghost eyebrows”—this indicates tendencies toward theft, poor intelligence, narrow-mindedness, and a lack of good friendships.
6. Sparse
Sparse eyebrows are thin or lightly distributed brows. In physiognomy, such individuals are said to have steady personalities and broad knowledge but often lack ambition and drive.
7. Messy
Messy eyebrows grow in a disorganized way, not lying close to the brow bone. In physiognomy, messy eyebrows indicate a chaotic mind; such individuals are seen as lacking comprehension and coherent thinking, often showing average intelligence and finding it hard to succeed in society. If their eyes also lack vitality, they may face lifelong poverty.
8. Short
Short eyebrows are shorter than the eyes. In physiognomy, such individuals tend to be impatient, favor quick resolutions, and dislike prolonged indecision. If the eyebrows lie close to the skin and are orderly, their judgments are often sound. However, if the eyebrows are thick and messy, this suggests a hasty, chaotic nature. Short eyebrows also generally indicate fewer siblings or weak ties with them.
9. Swift
Swift differs from short. Short eyebrows are simply shorter in length but have both a head and a tail. Swift eyebrows lack a tail, as if cut off midway. The reading for swift eyebrows is similar to short eyebrows, with the key difference that people with swift eyebrows often have no younger brothers, and if they do, they may experience separation or loss.
10. Intertwined
Intertwined eyebrows are two eyebrows that connect and intrude into each other’s space, as if in a struggle. In physiognomy, individuals with intertwined eyebrows often have conflicts with siblings and poor friendships. Such people tend to have turbulent emotions, be indecisive, and are easily swayed by romance, which can lead to scandals; however, if their eyes are bright and well-defined, they may be able to keep these tendencies in check. Intertwined eyebrows that encroach on the center of the forehead also indicate a pessimistic personality, a tendency to brood, and difficulty letting go.
11. Connected
Connected eyebrows, like intertwined eyebrows, extend into the center of the forehead so the brows appear as one. However, connected eyebrows are considered more favorable than intertwined ones: people with connected eyebrows are less likely to have conflicts with siblings or friends, though they may still be pessimistic and struggle to open their hearts during difficulties.
12. Yellow
Yellow eyebrows appear dry and yellowed; if they are naturally golden or blond rather than dry, that is not an issue. In physiognomy, yellow eyebrows indicate poor health and unfavorable marital prospects, especially during eyebrow-related fortune periods. They also suggest weak connections with siblings and friends.
13. Thin
Thin eyebrows are very faint or fine eyebrows. People with this brow type often have few siblings and weak bonds, yet they tend to think carefully and be intelligent. Note whether thin eyebrows also show signs of messiness or breaks; if so, refer to the interpretations for messy or broken eyebrows.
14. Damaged
Damaged eyebrows have been harmed by external factors, leaving a broken appearance. In physiognomy, damaged eyebrows suggest that a sibling may experience early separation or loss, and they also indicate a higher likelihood of hand injuries or fractures.
15. Missing
Missing eyebrows refers to the sudden absence of a portion of the eyebrow, with a meaning similar to damaged eyebrows.
16. Absent
Absent eyebrows are extremely sparse, giving the impression of having no eyebrows at all.
