The Eight Doors of Qimen Dunjia: Practical Applications

16.8K views

The Eight Gates are the eight directional sectors defined by the Eight Trigrams. They are: Xiu Gate, Sheng Gate, Shang Gate, Du Gate, Jing (Scenery) Gate, Si Gate, Jing (Alarm) Gate, and Kai Gate—each with its own meaning. Among them, Kai, Xiu, Sheng, and Jing (Scenery) are auspicious gates, generally suitable for seeking wealth, travel, marriage, and other positive endeavors; while Shang, Du, Si, and Jing (Alarm) are inauspicious gates, so auspicious undertakings are not advised. Below are examples of how the Eight Gates can be applied in daily life.

Seeking Wealth with Sheng Gate

Suppose you plan to seek wealth on Thursday, October 21, 2000—a Bing Wu day. Because this date falls after the Summer Solstice (June 22), you would use Yin Dun. On a Yin Dun Bing Wu day, the Sheng Gate is in the west. Therefore, heading west that day for business, stock trading, buying lottery tickets, or selling products should yield good results or provide accurate information to support sound decisions. If someone feels unwell or unlucky, they can also walk in an auspicious direction in the morning to boost health and luck; doing this consistently for about a week should produce noticeable results.

Note: Using an auspicious gate means walking toward that auspicious direction for at least 15 minutes. If the auspicious gate is in the west, first walk west for 15 minutes or more before going to your destination. If your destination is already to the west, you can head straight there upon departure.

Exams with Jing Gate

For example, if an exam is scheduled for Thursday, July 1, 2000—a Jia Yin day—the Jing (Scenery) Gate for Yin Dun is in the north. Walk north for 15 minutes before heading to the test site, and during breaks, try to stay in the northern part of the venue as much as possible.

Debt Collection with Shang Gate

If you’re having difficulty collecting a debt, you can use the energy of the Shang Gate to prompt repayment. For instance, if the debtor is to the north, calling or visiting to collect when the Shang Gate is in the north can bring unexpectedly good results.

Lonely Void Method

Original text: “The Nine Heavens Mysterious Lady said: This method strikes the lonely and hits the void; one woman can defeat ten men. Choosing the facing direction is the key, ensuring success without fail.”

Usage: This method was originally used in military campaigns, but today it’s commonly applied to competitive activities—such as contests and card games—to secure victory. For example, on a Jia Zi day at the You hour, if the “Lonely” falls in Xu and Hai, which lie in the northwest, then sitting in the northwest at that time will lead to great success.
