The 12 Signs of the Zodiac

In astronomy, the apparent path the Sun traces around Earth is called the "ecliptic." It spans about 16 degrees in width and forms a complete 360-degree circle around the planet. The ecliptic plane includes the orbits of all planets except Pluto, and it also encompasses the constellations. Roughly one constellation covers every 30 degrees, for a total of twelve. To the ancient Greeks, these constellations resembled various animals, which is where the twelve names originate.
The twelve constellations along the ecliptic each represent a sphere of planetary influence, indicating potential areas of development. Each of the 12 zodiac signs has its own ruling planet, and every planet exerts its influence in particular signs. For example, Aries is known for courage and vitality; when the Moon is in Aries, emotions tend to be expressed boldly and energetically. Likewise, when Mercury is in Aries, thinking and reasoning are marked by boldness, courage, and vitality.
That said, we first need to understand the basic patterns expressed by each zodiac sign. Once you grasp the core traits of each sign, you can identify the positions of your own planets and make the most of those strengths.
