Relationship Compatibility by Zodiac Sign
Astrological Compatibility Chart
Instructions for Use
Most people use this chart to check their compatibility with partners and friends. While that is helpful, remember this chart is a general overview of sign pairings, not an exhaustive comparison of Sun signs. It can be applied to all planets in the natal chart, as well as the Sun, Moon, and rising sign. You can also compare different planets, such as one person’s Sun and the other’s Moon. All of these offer valuable insights in astrology. In short, use this chart as a flexible guide to the qualities of compatibility indicated by sign positions.
Start with the first sign on the far left of the top row and compare the relationships from left to right. There are seven possible positions, based on the aspects formed between planets:
Yellow (Conjunction): Gathering, Stagnation
This one needs little explanation. When two planets are in the same sign (a conjunction), communication and understanding usually come easily, with little emotional friction. If different planets in two people’s charts fall in the same sign (especially Sun-Moon or Sun-rising sign), the effect is stronger, often bringing an instinctive attraction and smooth interactions. If only the Sun signs are the same, the result depends on other chart factors and the signs involved; some signs get along better than others. Signs of the same element can also slip into passivity or boredom.
Blue (Opposition): Perspectives, Attraction of Love or Hate
The classic idea that opposites attract refers to pairs of opposite signs, but the reality is more complex. Opposite signs share more than most people expect; they mirror each other, both complementary and conflicting. An opposition can be intense and powerful, but it requires balance and can stir jealousy. By exchanging perspectives, both people can deepen their understanding and feel destined for each other. Conversely, they may also fall into mutual dislike and intolerance.
Light Blue (Trine): Smooth, Coordinated
A trine links signs of the same element—fire, earth, air, or water. These pairs share basic approaches when dealing with issues and are naturally drawn to each other, even if they are not identical. This common ground fosters intuitive support and a sense of harmony. As partners or friends, they achieve ease without much effort and tend to seek out their similarities. In couples, the advantages often show up as untapped potential. A possible downside is that too much ease and tolerance can slow personal growth.
Red (Square): Conflict, Energy
A square often creates a contradictory stance toward each other. On one hand, both are keenly aware of the other and can communicate actively, which is why this aspect is common in friendships. On the other hand, the bond can be unstable. In certain dangerously tempting romances, frequent arguments can leave lasting pain and anger. This combination may require ongoing adjustments and compromises, which can amount to simply tolerating each other. Still, there are exceptions; when it works, this pairing can be very intense and compelling.
Purple (Quincunx): Mysterious, Out of Sync
The quincunx is intriguing but tricky. In most cases, the two planets are in incompatible signs. Even so, there can be a sense of serendipity and mutual attraction, often wrapped in a mysterious atmosphere. Each person has qualities the other completely lacks. Some astrologers link the quincunx to subtle sexual chemistry, describing a strong yet puzzling pull without a clear cause. In any case, strong quincunxes require careful study to understand how they actually play out.
Green (Sextile): Harmonious, Beneficial
Although sextiles vary, they are generally harmonious, with cooperation arising naturally and without effort. Often, what one person offers is exactly what the other lacks. The interaction feels comfortable and safe, though in romance it may not be the most exciting or alluring combination. Still, when different planets between two charts form sextiles, they create mutual support, making it easy for both people to understand each other and enjoy their time together.
Orange (Sub-aspect of Sextile): Sensitive, Learning
The 30-degree link between two signs (the semi-sextile) carries a hint of uneasy competition or jealousy. These adjacent signs are engaged in a learning process, setting aside qualities that would otherwise push things forward. One person may show traits the other lacks and quietly craves, leading to mutual annoyance or a touch of arrogance. The other may seem to keep something hidden, with reactions that feel excessive or perplexing. While abstract, this combination can nudge the relationship to evolve, moving ahead in a way that is both frustrating and compelling.
